And since April, I'm working on several earthy brown and green "things".

This cardigan for my goddaughter was ready just in time for her first birthday! It's a free pattern from Drops Garnstudio, a boring knit with an interesting sideways two-color construction. The yarn is Lana Grossa Mondo, a smooth mix of cotton and merino. The resulting fabric has a very nice drape!

The past few days I've also made a cozy for my brand new iPod Touch (yep, gadget freak here! My old second-generation iPod finally died...). With some sock yarn leftovers I got inspired by a pattern for Estonian mittens from the booklet Kirikindad 1 by Aino Praakli (a lovely gift from my Secret Pal 11). It was a very quick knit (took less than a day!) but I had taken a few false starts before, trying out a good number of stitches to cast on, and experimenting with colors and patterns. Trial and error is my default method... actually I rarely know what I'm doing! :-D

And this (long) weekend I finally picked up my brown sweater UFO again. My only knitting resolution for this year is: to knit myself a flattering and wearable sweater. Not such an easy thing to do; with this yarn (Lana Grossa Bingo Chine) I had started two patterns earlier (Tree Jacket and Sunrise Circle Jacket). Both looked crappy on me. I hope third time's a charm... with the old Rowan pattern Rose (by Kim Hargreaves). One sleeve and one neck piece to go!Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-67771123143375212252008-02-08T13:16:00.000+01:002008-02-08T14:21:15.327+01:00Pfoe... / Phew...!Dag allemaal... het is alweer een tijdje geleden, he!

Hello everyone... it's been a while!

Since January I've started working (almost) full-time again. I love, love, love it and am happier than I've been in a long time. But it means that there's not much time for other things. My family gets my full attention when I'm back home... in-between, I manage to find some time for knitting and catching up on internet stuff; but, unfortunately, blogging has lowest priority now.

In the coming months, therefore, I will not write very much on this blog. Perhaps that will change again in the future! In the meanwhile, I'll keep updating my photos on Flickr and my knitting and crochet projects on Ravelry.
Knitting-wise, the only thing I really want to achieve in 2008 is a lovely and wearable sweater for myself. That will take a lot of perseverance (my attention span is shorter than the blink of an eye) and the ability to spot flattering patterns. I'm now working on Rose by Kim Hargreaves, a free Rowan pattern, and it seems to be going in the right direction!
About one year ago I had knit a pair of socks for my mom -- Anastasias, with brown Colinette Jitterbug. I received a gorgeous package from my Secret Pal 11, who is not so secret anymore: Liia from Tallinn in Estonia -- her blog is http://kasitoo.blogspot.com. Again, Liia has spoilt me with a pile of wonderful stuff: a crocheted and felted scarf-wrap, blue Estonian wool yarn, sock yarn, a set of bag handles (that's great, I've been wanting to make a bag for a long time already!), two beautiful soft balls of "preyarn" (unspun yarn) for felting, a booklet on Estonian culture, another booklet on Estonian craft traditions, and a package with polymer clay.

I love everything... it's perfect stuff for me, as it is not the kind of things I would usually find in stores here: there are many new discoveries. The preyarn, for example: I've seen things that people have made with it, and it's gorgeous. I would love to make a felted hat and bag for myself soon! And the polymer clay is a fun one too: I used to work with that a lot when I was a teenager (I made jewelry) and I became really, really nostalgic receiving this. It'll be so much fun to give it a try again.

Thank you, Liia, for being such a great swap partner!

My own "spoilee" will not be announced yet. She is waiting for her last package -- I have been a bit late in sending it (my fault!) but it should have almost reached her. I can already reveal a little itty bitty thingy: she is a Scandinavian and lives waaaay up North, above the Polar Circle. Brr.

Just a short announcement to end -- I'm very busy with work these days, have to finish a large project before New Year and, except for announcing my "downstream" Secret Pal, will quit blogging for a month or so. Dear readers and knitting friends, may I already wish you all a very nice Christmas and New Year? Enjoy the festivities, I'm looking forward to writing again in 2008!

Almost one year ago, on November 14, 2006, I published my first post on BreiBeestBlog.

Since then, a lot has happened. I've learned so much about knitting; I've made numerous new projects; started to appreciate so many beautiful yarns; and, most of all, I've met many wonderful people (virtually or in the flesh). More than ever, knitting is a constant source of joy for me.

To celebrate this in style, and to thank everyone for your lovely feedback and comments, I'm having a large anniversary lottery! My innocent and totally impartial two-year-old son will draw the three winners, whose names will be announced during the week of November 19.

And I think the three prizes are really cool, if you allow me to boast a bit :-)

The 1st prize is a package with two skeins: one 100g natural sock yarn by Storm in the Attic (color "Sea Foam" which is a beautiful, muted blue-green) and one 100g skein of Manos del Uruguay 100% wool, worsted weight. It's color 8891 (a mix of browns, grays, and some peachy pink) and a single ply.

Second prize is a skein of 100g worsted weight Blue Faced Leicester, also from Storm in the Attic, our Rotterdam yarn lady. The color, "Heavy", reminds me of ice cream with chocolate and cherries (Cherry Garcia, anyone?). I think it'll make a gorgeous hat or some cool mittens.

Third prize is a ball of 100g ONline Supersocke 100, special color 909 which is a mix of browns, grays and off-white. For a nice pair of men's socks?

Doe mee! Men zegge het voort! :-)

Participate & spread the word!

I was tagged twice by Yvonne.

This is one to be proud of, isn't it?
Now, it's always extremely hard to think of a list of other bloggers to tag. I read so many blogs, and enjoy all of them. Actually, I want to tag everyone I read, because not listing someone is unfair and undeserved! Still, I'll try to make a list of people whose blogs I always select first when checking my RSS reader: Puk, Yvon, Saskia (young mom and our Rotterdam Knitty heroine!), Deirdre, Maijamirjami and Pikku-Kettu (my lovely SP10 partners), the crazy Knitters Uncensored podcasters Elemmaciltur and Miss Bockstark (Cashyie is still blogless, I think), and Cosymakes whose work I find very interesting and beautiful.

Then there was a second "tag" from Yvonne -- the famous one where you list 8 random facts about yourself.
The Rules: Once tagged, you must link to the person who tagged you. I'd fly to Italy just to eat that.

I've witnessed the rise of a new art genre from (relatively) close by. Some of the artists I've been in touch with have become pretty well-known in the art world.

I'm not fond of sports. There are no sports that I really like to practice or that I find interesting enough to follow.

One day, I'd love to live (permanently, even) in a house boat, a mill, radar tower, lighthouse, undeveloped warehouse, old cafe or old factory.

I have flat feet (pes planus / fallen arches). They don't cause me physical discomfort, but it's really difficult to find nice shoes that are wide enough.

I know (or have known) an awful lot about cacti, calligraphy, breastfeeding and the internet.

I love to (and deeply enjoy) learn(ing) new things.

With this one, I'm tagging anyone who wants to give this a shot as well.Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-36580380709115660702007-11-05T21:17:00.000+01:002007-11-05T21:50:24.089+01:00Moe maar voldaan... / Tired but happyZaterdag was dé dag.

A short summary... last Saturday was the Dutch Stitch 'n Bitch day: the largest knitting fair in the Netherlands. Many Dutch knitbloggers have already written about it; it was fun, fun, fun!
For me, the highlight of the day was a spinning workshop by fellow SnBRotterdam members Yvon and Constance -- I can spin (at least a little bit) with a spindle now! It was lovely meeting Yarnissima as well (although it was very short...). And of course I bought a few lovely yarns, including a large skein of Kauni Effektgarn and a few balls of brown Drops Alpaca for my first colorwork project.Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-23762422160835381442007-10-26T13:16:00.000+01:002007-10-26T13:58:11.057+01:00Herfstig / AutumnyLieve mensen!

Next weekend, on 3 November, there will be the second Stitch 'n Bitch Day here in Rotterdam. It's the largest knitting-related event of the year; I'm going to follow several workshops (Japanese knitting; spindle spinning; and sock knitting by Yarnissima!). Oh boy, do I look forward to it!

And here's a quick overview of my knitting projects; click on the pictures for more info!

One Ringwood Pattern sock (from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush) is finished. Dilemma. It's too small for the intended recipient: my good friend J. who has shoe size 42. It fits my size 39 foot perfectly. Is this destiny? Should I keep these for myself? Or frog the toes and make them longer? Haven't decided yet.

By the way, I like(d) this Ringwood pattern so much that I'm making a cute toddler version for my little boy. With the (large amount of) leftovers of Wollmeise Granatapfel from my Pomatomi (which suffer from Second Sock Syndrome).

Ah, peuters! :-))

My dear son has also received a pair of handknit mittens and a matching hat, after a generic pattern by Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Alas, he doesn't appreciate them and tears them off after one second or so. Ah, those joyful toddlers! :-))

Mijn meisjes-streepjes-Noro-sjaal is af! Roze!

My girly striped Noro scarf is done! It's very pink! With a fringe! I'll wear it at the Stitch 'n Bitch Day.

And last but not least: I'm finally making a sweater for myself. The Sunrise Circle Jacket by Kate Gilbert. I hope I'll find the courage and persistance to finish it. I hope it'll fit and will be flattering. Wish me luck and strength!

Finally -- the last weeks, I have left very few comments on other people's blogs and have reacted too little on your comments and messages and remarks. For some reason or another (too busy? Autumn? too tired? snotty nose and sore throat?) I don't have much energy for that, but do know that I read all your blogs with great interest and that I do appreciate your comments very much! Hopefully a new bout of energy will follow soon so that I can catch up.Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-47704547914305575392007-10-20T13:15:00.000+01:002007-10-20T13:30:42.270+01:00Estonian goodness (eng)This week, I received a huge box in the mail...

Turned out to be a surprise from my Secret Pal 11, Liia, from Tallinn (Estonia)! We already had been mailing back and forth a bit, and Liia had made me pretty curious with some questions about lace vs. colorwork knitting.

Her package clearly went into the colorwork / fair isle direction, look at this:

Two books about traditional Estonian mittens, by Aino Praakli, a researcher who has re-knit mittens from museum collections and has published the patterns. I didn't know much about Estonian mittens before, and I have already spent several hours marvelling at the examples in these booklets; the mitterns look very pure and modern, while incorporating traditional techniques and motifs. I love these patterns very, very much... a good motivation to get started with colorwork soon!

Liia's package also included three (!) bars of chocolate and marzipan (delicious and all gone, of course!) and some other lovely goods:

A ball of cotton, a bag with beautiful colorful glass beads, a greeting card from Tallinn AND a huuuge ball of rainbow-colored wool. It can be used for knitting + felting (I think this would make a lovely bag!) or for spinning; I'm going to follow a drop spindle workshop on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day on 3 November in Rotterdam so this could become my first handspun as well :-)

In any case, this was a very special package full of beautiful, interesting gifts... I've enjoyed getting a taste of Estonia through it! Thank you, Liia!

Phew, hectic times in the Breibeest household. Busy at work, busy with other activities, busy with travelling from and to work. And therefore, too little time to write and comment about knitting. So, here's a very quick update with many photos and (this time) not so much blah-blah :-) ... if you'd like some more information about the projects below, click on the photos and you'll arrive at their Flickr page!

To start: a few forgotten FOs that I found when cleaning our wardrobe.

Glimmende roze muts.

Doesn't flatter me, but it's cute for someone else! Size teenage girl or small woman's head; does anyone want it?

Vliegeniersmuts in acryl. Hele leuke constructie, maar niet flatterend. En die acryl, brr.

Aviator cap in acrylic. Cool construction (short rows), but not flattering. And that acrylic... shudder.

En nog wat nieuwtjes:

And then some new(er) stuff:

The Trekking Pro Natura socks (a Nancy Bush pattern) are progressing slowly. They make me pretty happy, because they look very elegant when worn.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2395/1550619659_8b4556b997.jpg" alt="Noro Scarf, "Hers"" height="332" width="500" />

A striped Noro scarf. Some time ago, I had made a blue one for my boyfriend; now I'm making myself a pink one!

Onze kleine man (2 jaar) krijgt binnenkort lekker warme merino handschoenen en een bijpassende muts.

Our little one (2 years old) will soon receive nice and warm, merino mittens and a matching hat.

And for a stylish friend (who normally only wears black) I'm making these hand warmers as a birthday gift.

Until last Friday evening, a sewing machine was a foreign and slightly frightening object for me. But on Saturday morning this was about to change, as I was then having my first sewing lesson at Rotterdam's brand new Naaicafé (sewing cafe).

Praise and bless our gifted teacher, Caroline Vogel, who is also the initiator of the sewing cafe. In two hours, she had explained the basics of a sewing machine; and she let us all make a small, simple lined bag. (We were 7 people, aged 21-50 (?), 6 ladies and one guy, all colors of the rainbow.) During the next lessons we'll make a skirt, a pair of trousers, a top and a blouse/shirt.

I've started this course out of curiosity -- do I find sewing fun? Do I like working with a sewing machine? Am I not too clumsy for it? Deep inside, I hope to make my own clothing some day; but first, of course, I need to know if it's my cup of tea in the first place. And, well, after this first lesson I felt so energized and confident that I've undertaken a practice project on my old 1980s Singer. I've tried the tool roll from Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing.

Now my DPNs have their own handy case. Made with cheap IKEA cotton and absolutely not perfect. But I had fun and it makes me happy. Hopefully I'll stay motivated!

The new Knitty is up! It's chock-full of patterns that I find beautiful and very wearable: Roam and Neiman are exactly the kind of sweaters that I've been looking for, and I'm totally in love with the Muir wrap.

And sometimes it just happens that a few pieces of a puzzle suddenly fall together and match. Several balls of beautiful stash yarn had no good destination, and then, poof!, you find the perfect pattern. This has just happened to me: with Rowan Country and Urchin.

Helemaal perfect.

Last year, I had bought 3 balls of Rowan Country on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day in Rotterdam. Lovely super bulky yarn, 100% wool, in green and brown, subtly self-striping. But not enough for a scarf. I had tried several patterns, frogged and frogged again, and, frustrated, buried the yarn deep in my stash. Such a pity. And suddenly, there was Urchin, a tam / beret pattern by the very talented Ysolda Teague, in the new Knitty. Perfect!

Ik word helemaal vrolijk van dit mutsje! Want:

het was erg leuk om te maken; ik kan dit patroon aanbevelen voor allerlei "gekke" garens, ook dikke handgesponnen experimenten;

het ging ontzettend snel (zo'n 4 tot 5 uur gebreid, en ik ben een nogal trage breister);

het past perfect (ik maakte maat L maar deed 7 i.p.v. 8 "spieën");

het past helemaal bij me, model en kleur en alles;

het kleurt ontzettend mooi bij mijn nieuwe bruine duffelcoat;

This beret / tam makes me totally happy! Because:

it was so much fun to make! I can recommend this pattern for all kinds of "crazy" bulky yarns, including strange handspun experiments;

it went super-fast (4 to 5 hours, and I'm a slow knitter);

it fits perfectly (I made size L but did only 7 wedges instead of 8);

it's very much "me" (model and color and everything);

it matches my brand new brown duffel coat;

and I still have more than 1 ball left, good for a matching neckwarmer.

The Big Boy Blanket is slowly growing; in the same bulky merino-acrylic mix I've made two quick projects: a crocheted spiral scarf and a pair of very thick homey socks to warm my poor icy feet.

But in fact, I've been wanting to write about a nice thrift find for some time: a knitting pattern book from 1949.

I really love that era's fashion style. I find it extremely elegant. Probably, knitting (and recycling yarn) was a bare necessity for women in those years shortly after the war. Patterns usually called for fine yarn and needles, comparable to our current sock yarns. But because of that, and because of the great stitch patterns, shaping and detailing, the clothing usually looks very refined.

Soms is het ook gewoon grappig.

And sometimes, it's just downright funny.

The knitting book I've bought was apparently published as a counterpart to the Dutch-language popular women's magazine Libelle -- which still exists today.

Above and below are a few of my favorites from the pattern booklet.

Most of the patterns are written for a 90 to 98 cm bust. Mine is slightly larger (approx. 105 cm). I was wondering if I would be able to easily adapt the patterns in the booklet by simply using a looser gauge. Or would it be better to entirely recalculate the designs? Does someone have experience with that?

BTW, you can see the whole booklet here (on Flickr).Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-30859698276216854672007-08-25T10:52:00.000+01:002007-08-25T11:41:50.213+01:00Kleine jongens worden groot / Little Boy, Big BoyMijn zoontje is pas twee geworden -- ongelooflijk hoe de tijd vliegt!

My toddler son has just turned two. It's incredible how time flies! In fact, I haven't knit many things for him yet and I intend to change that.
During a conversation on one of our Stitch 'n Bitch evenings, a few fellow knitters told how much their boys/kids love their handknit blankies. This inspired me to knit a blanket for my own curly-haired sweet boy!

I've been looking around for lovely blanket patterns; preferably one that is slightly "rough" and simple, not too babyish or childish, and large enough. A blanket that a 8-year-old or even 12-year-old boy would still like.

I love the (crocheted) Babette Blanket, but it's rather girly. Further, I've always liked the Log Cabin Blanket (o.a. from Mason-Dixon Knitting). And the Circle of Friends Blanket from Last Minute Knitted Gifts is lovely because of its geometric simplicity. My heart especially started to beat faster when I saw this fabulous blankie made by Mustaa Villaa for her son. Great color palette in ton-sur-ton blue. And despite the garter stitch it has a very rich and complex structure. I wanted to make something similar; using garter stitch and, why not, mitered squares.

I started designing in Excel, and this is the schematic that I came up with.

I recently bought an enormous load of bulky yarn (Lana Grossa Due again); the colors for the blanket will be light green, dark green and blue -- all in solid and "chiné" (marled?) version.

Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-40603540790169963352007-08-20T19:03:00.000+01:002007-08-20T19:49:52.258+01:00Tas & Omslagdoek / Bag & ShawlHe he.

Phew. New job; my son has just turned 2 (which we celebrated in style!); and we've just returned from a long weekend in Kassel (visiting documenta 12 and, generally, having fun with old Belgian friends). And before you know it, you haven't blogged for about three weeks. Duh.

And in the meanwhile, ironically, I received this award! Thank you, Maijamirjami! Not sure if I deserve it ;-)

There are many bloggers whom I'd love to nominate, but I've seen this award on many blogs already. I'm a bit late to the party, I guess! So, at first I thought about the nice blogging ladies of Stitch 'n Bitch Rotterdam: knittingajour, Saskia, Storm op Zolder, Haakpoes and Knitting Frog (who has left NL in the meanwhile...) (we miss you!). I hope I didn't forget anyone!!!
I actually read (and thoroughly enjoy) many other blogs as well, but I'm planning to devote a separate post to that. More to come, therefore :-)

During the past few weeks, I miraculously did manage to Finish two Objects. The first is a crocheted shopping bag: the Reduction Tote Bag from Crochet me Magazine. Made with crochet cotton, kindly donated by knittingajour! The deep blue color is actually much nicer than in the photograph; it's very difficult to capture.

I like the bag. It folds into a very small square and can be stored into its own pocket (the beige granny square between the handles); it can hold many groceries and is intended to be worn over one shoulder. I think this pattern is also very appropriate for sock yarn, although you need quite a bit of it (I'd say 50 grams or more).

Perfect!

A second -- and ultra-quick -- project: a very warm and thick shawl for my mom. Via marktplaats.nl (the very popular Dutch eBay clone) I had bought 10 balls of Lana Grossa Due for a very low price. It's a nice bulky yarn that comes in lovely colors; a merino-acrylic mix. After some detective work (long live Ravelry!) I happened upon a nice pattern for a Feather and Fan Comfort Shawl.

The result is an, ehm, peculiar bulky red shawl. Very warm, which was my intention. I think it's funny and eccentric (as most shawls are knit in teeny weeny detailed lace patterns; this is different!) and I hope my mom will enjoy it very much.Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-57254103885900870932007-08-06T16:02:00.000+01:002007-08-06T20:03:19.783+01:00Secret Pal 11 Questionnaire (eng)Hi there, new Secret Pal! Nice to meet you... I hope we'll have fun together :-) To start, here's my questionnaire. It's different from my Secret Pal 10 questionnaire... this means that I've evolved as a knitter (I like to grow and learn!) and that you definitely do not have to take everything in this questionnaire very literally.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

There are very few fibers that I don't like. I can appreciate good-quality, cheap, sturdy 100% acrylic for kids, and I can appreciate lovely and exclusive 100% silks or alpacas or cashmeres. If the yarn is well-made, interesting and of good quality, I will probably like it.

I don't mind synthetics; my clothes usually get dirty rather quickly (I have a toddler son) and I like my handknits to be low-maintenance. When I knit for myself, I usually go for synthetic and wool or cotton mixes. Every now and then I spoil myself (or someone else) with something luxurious too.

I'm always interested in local yarn brands, so sending me something from your own country will always make me happy!

That said, I'm usually not a very big fan of crazy novelty yarns. A bit of glimmer can be cool, but I'm not into eyelash yarns or crazy effects. And I deeply hate yarn that pills. Ugh!!

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a simple, 40 cm long plastic needle bag for my long straight needles and two simple pouches for my dpns and my crochet hooks. Nothing fancy, but they're handy and organized enough.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I learned to knit and crochet when I was 8, at my Belgian catholic girls' school. Haven't done it continuously, though. I consider myself a good intermediate and I'm willing to try and undertake complex projects.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I have an Amazon wish list which is not up-to-date anymore. If you like, I can update it and send you the URL.

5. What's your favorite scent?

My favorite perfume, since my teenage years, has been Eau d'Issey by Issey Miyake: very light and fresh (luckily it's a classic that won't go out of the market).
I love many natural smells; my favorites are probably lime and orange tree blossoms. I also adore the smell of any good food that is on the stove or in the oven, the smell of fresh coffee, of the sea, of freshly-mown grass, of rain and springtime and autumn leaves... mmm... so many good smells.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I love to eat, and I love sweets (probably a bit too much as I tend to being a bit overweight :-). I like good cookies, pastry and chocolate but am not very fond of licorice.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I also crochet (love it!), but not often enough. I can do cross-stitch embroidery, macrame, beadwork. I'm handy and creative with computers in general and I consider myself a decent amateur photographer. I would love to learn to spin with a simple drop spindle and I want to learn to sew. I already own a sewing machine (an old simple Singer that my Mom gave to me) and want to get started with it this Autumn.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I can appreciate almost anything that is good in its own genre and I like to discover new things. I tend to prefer to listen to world music, funk, disco, soul, indie rock (the more experimental kind), electronic music (IDM) and contemporary classical.
My computer does play mp3s.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?

I prefer darker, saturated and bright colors and am not a very big fan of white, beiges and pastels (these don't flatter me very much, I find).
Some of my favorite colors are petrol blue (saturated dark blue-green), purple, dark and bright blue, dark and bright green, brown, gray, deep orange and "old pink". I wear a lot of black.

I'm usually not a big fan of variegated yarns (although exceptions are possible). I usually buy and knit with solids and semi-solids.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I live together with my boyfriend and our sweet and adorable two-year-old son. We are very much cat lovers, but at this moment we don't have a cat because of our small house and the probable toddler&cat incompatibility.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Yes to everything, except ponchos.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Same as with yarn: I can appreciate a lot of different things. Like many people, I enjoy knitting socks, but I also find it fun to make larger projects such as sweaters and shawls. These take forever, though; my attention span is rather short :-)

13. What are you knitting right now?

On the needles now: a Hanami Stole, a crocheted Reduction Tote Bag, one Pomatomus sock (Second Sock Syndrome!), a bulky Feather and Fan Comfort Shawl and a brown cotton Stargazer summer top.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

Yes, absolutely!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

It all depends on the project; I knit with straight or circular needles equally. I own all kinds of needles, but my favorite ones seem to be very slippery metal ones: Addi Turbo circulars and vintage Atan straight needles.
I'm not very fond of coated aluminum needles; I don't like how they feel when they rub against each other.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

I own both. I thought I wouldn't need them, but I was wrong :-)

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

Almost a year: a pile of crocheted hexagons that are destined to become an afghan (or maybe not).

18. What is your favorite holiday?

The Belgian national holiday: 21 July. The weather is usually superb and summery then and I often go to the Gentse Feesten (a fantastic city festival in Ghent, Belgium) around that time.

19. Is there anything that you collect?

Shoes and clothing :-)
I'm also very much a fan of beautiful modernist and vintage glass, furniture and tableware (especially Dutch and Scandinavian), but I don't actively collect that.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I only have a subscription to Rowan Magazine and I usually buy the very nice Dutch craft magazine Handwerken Zonder Grenzen. I intend to get a subscription to Interweave Knits as well.
I'd like to buy the Barbara Walker stitch pattern books and some more books by Nancy Bush (haven't decided yet which ones).

If you would have old issues of Interweave Knits or Crochet, then I'd be very interested in photocopies of the following patterns (only if you have them!):
- the Union Square Market Pullover by Kate Gilbert, Interweave Knits, Fall 2005
- the Babette Blanket by Kathy Merrick, Interweave Crochet, Spring 2006

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

- Intarsia / fair isle
- A moebius wrap
- Spinning with a drop spindle
- And I want to start designing patterns.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes! My feet are European size 39; exactly 25 cm long. I like it when my socks are snug-fitting, I usually make them 23 to 24 cms long when I knit them for myself.

23. When is your birthday?

16 April.

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?

I'm http://www.ravelry.com/people/Breibeest. If you are on Ravelry too: my stash will give you a very good idea of the kinds of colors that I like.Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-26270161837731997502007-08-04T20:39:00.000+01:002007-08-04T21:22:43.328+01:00RecyclageHet is eindelijk zomer, mensen! Heerlijk!

Finally, Summer has arrived in the Low Countries! After writing this blog post I'll return to our balcony with a glass of fresh white wine. Mmmm!

No news on the UFO front. I'm working on several larger projects that I've written about earlier; I can report very few developments because I spent last week's free hours mostly in the company of Harry Potter and my family and loved ones. Not too bad either :-)

Of misschien toch.

Or, maybe there is a bit of news. On marktplaats.nl (the very popular Dutch ebay clone) I found 10 balls of Lana Grossa Due: bulky yarn in a 50% merino / 50% acrylic mix. For a very low price, and in a lovely deep dark red color. Great find! With this yarn, I'm now making a bulky, soft and warm feather and fan shawl. It is destined to become 150 cm broad; a gift for my mom, who had major heart surgery in the beginning of this year. Finally, after some worrying complications, she is slowly recovering. But for some unclear reason she's always cold; I hope this shawl will help her stay warm.

And then: my recycling adventures. For some time now, I've been following Cosymakes, a blog by Cosette, a knitter who studied theology and who (among other things) makes beautiful hats from recycled wool and thrifted buttons. She makes a very interesting connection between theology and textiles -- respect for materials, for the handmade, and the idea that "lifeless", mass-produced garments can receive a second life through thrifting and re-use. I knit, among other things, because I'm very critical of the clothing and fashion industry; recycling and re-use fit very well into this picture.
By reading Cosette's blog, therefore, I really started to dig the idea to start recycling thrifted and second-hand wool and sweaters as well. Some time ago, I experimented with an old cotton-acrylic Mexx sweater that I didn't wear anymore (it was never very flattering). I found it difficult to dispose of it, and therefore I undid the seams and ripped it entirely. Result: 600g of very soft and light worsted weight black yarn which may, for example, become a beautiful Rusted Root for myself... who knows?Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-90745741253097839782007-07-25T15:25:00.001+01:002007-07-25T15:29:35.634+01:00Hanami groeit / Hanami is growing

Hanami is growing..., originally uploaded by Breibeest.

During the past few weeks, I've regularly worked on my Hanami Stole. It's a great project! Pretty quick; the pattern is easy and I find the yarn (Rowan Kidsilk Night, a fine mohair-silk mix with a subtle silver glimmer) really nice and fun to work with.

One cool feature of the pattern? It really doesn't matter if you make a minor mistake (e.g. some miscounting of yarnovers). The holes are so irregular that small miscalculations are totally invisible.

The original pattern contains a regular basketweave lace pattern on one side, and an irregular cherry blossom "snow" pattern of holes on the other side. I'm very fond of irregularity and randomness myself, so I want to make the "random" pattern on both sides. I started in the middle with a provisional cast-on. Still 15 cms on one side to go, then the stole will be half done. Next, I will pick up the stitches from the provisional cast-on and knit the other side in exactly the same way.

I think that, after light blocking, the stole will measure approx. 60 x 200 cm.
Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-17473568793380863772007-07-16T14:34:00.000+01:002007-07-16T14:59:55.236+01:00Finally, the Boyfriend has some Socks.Eindelijk. Finally.

Eindelijk! Finally!

Ze zijn af: de Boyfriend Socks (ook bekend als De Sokken Waar Ik Vier Maanden Over Deed)!

They're finished: the Boyfriend Socks (aka the Socks That Took Me Four Months)!

Why did it take so long? I blame the black yarn (Regia Silk Uni -- very soft!), the 80 stitches per row and the fact that I didn't find the pattern entertaining enough. The ribbing makes it, potentially, a very quick knit (which I like) but the cables interrupt the flow all the time. Or something like that. In any case, I'm proud of the result and I'm happy that they look so good on my sweetheart's feet! This was the first pair I've ever knit for him, and I hope that many others will follow (not black ones, though :-)

In the meanwhile, I try to be a good girl and to stick to my System: I allow myself to work on max. five (5) active projects simultaneously.

Sporadically (for three weeks now?) I've been working on a pair of Pomatomus socks. It's the "spiciest" sock pattern I've ever attempted (though Kew is probably a close second). And there was a false start (?): I first knitted a pattern repeat with 2,5 mm needles but that was too tight to fit over my heal! So I frogged that and re-started with 3 mm Addis; at this moment I'm almost looking at a finished, stretchy and fitting first sock for my wide feet and shapely calves.

<img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1081/790513413_8c6e8755c8.jpg" alt="Tomatomus?

The yarn: Wollmeise Sockenwolle in colorway Granatapfel, medium. The Wollmeise is a German lady who dyes wool in the most fantastic, bright colors. A true discovery. The colors are extremely deep and rich; her sock yarn, furthermore, is very sturdy and slick and has amazing stitch definition. It's not stretchy at all, so very different from the likes of Colinette Jitterbug.

Since I've been using Ravelry, I've discovered several interesting yarns. I knew Wollmeise already, but I also happened upon Habu -- apparently a Japanese brand with a very broad range of (what I'd call) high-tech yarns in all kinds of blends. Such as... ahem... silk with stainless steel, anyone? Incredible, and just the thing for me! Does anyone know of a good and/or affordable way to find Habu yarns in Europe?

This treasure hunt gave me some ideas. On Ravelry, the majority of popular yarns are US-based; logical since (my rough estimate) 95% of all users live in the States. But there are so many wonderful indie, small-scale spinners, dyers etc. in Europe! For example, Miss Bockstark has made a nice list of German indie yarn shops. And here in Rotterdam we have our superb Storm op Zolder. In other European countries, there are probably other gems to be found and discovered.
So: I feel like initiating a "European Indie Handdyed Yarn Knit-Along" (under a sexier name, preferably) in order to give our own indie yarn folks some well-deserved exposure. What do you think, dear readers? Would you participate in such a KAL? And especially, if you fancy the idea, are there people out there who would like to help me organizing it? I think it's quite a bit of work to manage such a KAL, and I would like to do it right, so all help is welcome!

This week, I tried dyeing yarn for the first time. I used four of the six packs of Kool-Aid that my Secret Pal Maijamirjami had sent me, and of course a ball of blank ONline sock yarn. I used Knitty's Kool-Aid tutorial for guidance.

I had seen other yarn dyed with Kool-Aid and always found the colors rather "sugary" (no wonder, it's lemonade after all). So, my main goal was to try and make the colors as dark and saturated as possible. I think I succeeded in that.

Dit is het resultaat: See the result :

I'm baptizing this unique colorway "Dora the Explorer". Because the colors are happy and childlike; if Dora would wear handknit socks, this yarn would be a great candidate, I think.

I made photos of my entire working process, just for fun. You can see a slide show here. Disclaimer: this is not a tutorial! I'm an absolute beginner and I have probably made some mistakes.

In any case, I did ONE major stupid thing -- when rinsing the yarn after the dye job, I let my whole skein become one big tangled mess. That was SO dumb. I've spent an entire evening untangling the hank, of course surrounded by a pervasive cloud of sweet candy smell. My boyfriend, wisely, didn't come near me as I was cursing, sighing and generally being extremely pissed at myself. But in the end it turned out fine.

So, now, am I infected by the dyeing virus? Would I try this again? I loved it, had a lot of fun and would like to repeat it, but I don't think I'll become a fanatic dyer. The resulting skein is a variegated yarn, which I'm usually not a fan of, so next time I'd like to go for something (semi-)solid.

These days, my head is overflowing with good knitting-related ideas and plans. I'm sure you all know how that feels! :-) My stash has grown exponentially during the last few months, and for most yarns I already have a very nice and interesting pattern in mind. So many beautiful things to knit, so many exciting techniques to try out, and so little time! I find myself chronically lacking sleep (it's not too bad, though, just that the days are too short) and I have trouble keeping myself from starting 20 projects simultaneously.

As a compromise, I'm allowing myself to work on five projects simultaneously, hibernating projects not included (haha, Pikku-Kettu, I can't help thinking about your System ;-).

I've already blogged about the Boyfriend Socks and my dad's Fancy Socks. Not much news there, except that the Boyfriend Socks are (finally) almost ready and that I'm considering frogging the Fancy Sock In Progress in order to start again with slightly thinner needles, because Trekking XXL is a bit finer than most regular sock yarns.

(eng)Secret Pal 10 is drawing to an end, and a few revelations have taken place...

My "downstream" pal was Pikku-Kettu, and my "upstream" pal was Maijamirjami ... both are Finnish knitters, both very nice people, and both very skilled (in different ways) in many things crafty. Do check out their blogs! It was lovely getting to know you both, ladies (I know that you read each other's blogs) and I hope we'll keep in touch for a long time to come!

Needless to say that I enjoyed this Secret Pal round (my first) very much. I loved making presents, I loved receiving them (of course) and I loved learning a bit more about crafts in Finland; apparently many kids learn to do crafts there from a young age, and this apparently results in (among others) interesting yarn production and, of course, many very skilled and dedicated crafters. At least, that's my impression so far! I've always had a soft spot for Scandinavia, and being matched with two Finnish ladies was therefore very fortunate, as far as I'm concerned.

Now, look at the lovely final package that I received from Maijamirjami...!

It had superb stamps on it (even one with Lordi, if I'm not mistaken). What a good way to start! And then, the contents... four balls of lovely, fluffy Drops Symphony; this yarn looks and feels like angora, but it's actually merino! And a pair of beautiful handknit fingerless gloves in the same 'old pink' color -- look at the finishing, and the lovely elegant cable on the little finger. Beautiful. There was also a keyring in old pink (Grumperina would call it periwinkle, I think), two bars of chocolate (yum! gone immediately!), a novel by Virginia Woolf and... a very elegant felted bag with lace! I'm very curious about that last one -- it's beautifully made, and would it be "found" or vintage lace, or even bobbin lace that Maijamirjami has made herself? I still have to find out.

In any case, my boyfriend can witness that I was in an exalted mood for hours afterwards :-)Breibeesthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14472159792849815387noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8690570341066513759.post-13678801163374062132007-06-21T20:29:00.001+01:002007-06-21T20:32:25.124+01:00Papa Noro

Father's Day Gift, originally uploaded by Breibeest.
