Tomatomus? Granatomus? EU KAL?

Ik ben al een tijdje (een drietal weken?) sporadisch bezig met een paar Pomatomus-sokken. (Het patroon is ook vertaald naar het Nederlands en beschikbaar bij Wolhalla!) Het is het "moeilijkste" sokkenpatroon wat ik ooit probeerde (OK, misschien met concurrentie van de Kew-sokken). En er was een valse start: ik was begonnen met naalden van 2,5 mm maar de sok paste niet over m'n hiel! Maar met 3 mm wordt het een perfecte, rekbare sok voor me.

Sporadically (for three weeks now?) I've been working on a pair of Pomatomus socks. It's the "spiciest" sock pattern I've ever attempted (though Kew is probably a close second). And there was a false start (?): I first knitted a pattern repeat with 2,5 mm needles but that was too tight to fit over my heal! So I frogged that and re-started with 3 mm Addis; at this moment I'm almost looking at a finished, stretchy and fitting first sock for my wide feet and shapely calves.



De wol: Wollmeise Sockenwolle in kleur Granatapfel, medium. De Wollmeise is een Duitse dame die met de hand wol in prachtige, felle kleuren verft. Echt een ontdekking. De kleuren zijn ongelooflijk mooi en diep, en de sokkenwol is bijzonder stevig en glad waardoor de steken heel goed uitkomen. Geen rekbare wol zoals Colinette Jitterbug dus, en ook niet pluizig zoals Opal en Trekking en andere bekende Duitse sokkengarens.

The yarn: Wollmeise Sockenwolle in colorway Granatapfel, medium. The Wollmeise is a German lady who dyes wool in the most fantastic, bright colors. A true discovery. The colors are extremely deep and rich; her sock yarn, furthermore, is very sturdy and slick and has amazing stitch definition. It's not stretchy at all, so very different from the likes of Colinette Jitterbug. It also has NO fuzz, unlike Opal and Trekking and other well-known German sock yarns.

Sinds ik op Ravelry zit, heb ik een hoop interessante nieuwe garens leren kennen. Wollmeise kende ik al eerder, maar ik stootte ook op Habu -- een Japans merk dat een heel breed aanbod van "high-tech" garens heeft in allerlei mengelingen. Zoals zijde met roestvrij staal (!) en dergelijke. Spannend vind ik dat! Weet iemand een goeie of goedkope manier om in Europa aan Habu-garen te komen?

Since I've been using Ravelry, I've discovered several interesting yarns. I knew Wollmeise already, but I also happened upon Habu -- apparently a Japanese brand with a very broad range of (what I'd call) high-tech yarns in all kinds of blends. Such as... ahem... silk with stainless steel, anyone? Incredible, and just the thing for me! Does anyone know of a good and/or affordable way to find Habu yarns in Europe?

Die ontdekkingstocht bracht me ook op ideeën. Op Ravelry vind je vooral Amerikaanse garens; logisch, want ik schat dat 95% van de gebruikers (momenteel) in de VS wonen. Maar er zijn ook zoveel goeie onafhankelijke en kleinschalige wolververs, spinners e.d. in Europa! Zo vind je bijvoorbeeld bij Miss Bockstarck een leuk overzicht van Duitse kleine "indie" bedrijfjes die handgeverfde wol maken en verkopen. Bij ons in Rotterdam heb je natuurlijk de onvolprezen Storm op Zolder. En in andere Europese landen...?
Dus: ik heb erg veel zin om een "Europese Handgeverfde Garens Knit-Along" te lanceren om al die kleine maar hele goeie bedrijfjes in het zonnetje te zetten. Wat vinden jullie van dit plan? Zou je meedoen aan zo'n KAL? En vooral, als jullie het idee leuk vinden, is er iemand die zin heeft om dit samen met mij te organiseren? Ik denk dat het best veel werk is om zo'n KAL goed te managen, dus hulp is zeker welkom.



This treasure hunt gave me some ideas. On Ravelry, the majority of popular yarns are US-based; logical since (my rough estimate) 95% of all users live in the States. But there are so many wonderful indie, small-scale spinners, dyers etc. in Europe! For example, Miss Bockstark has made a nice list of German indie yarn shops. And here in Rotterdam we have our superb Storm op Zolder. In other European countries, there are probably other gems to be found and discovered.
So: I feel like initiating a "European Indie Handdyed Yarn Knit-Along" (under a sexier name, preferably) in order to give our own indie yarn folks some well-deserved exposure. What do you think, dear readers? Would you participate in such a KAL? And especially, if you fancy the idea, are there people out there who would like to help me organizing it? I think it's quite a bit of work to manage such a KAL, and I would like to do it right, so all help is welcome!

Door de wol geverfd / Dyed in the wool

Deze week heb ik voor het eerst geprobeerd om zelf wol te verven, met vier van de zes zakjes Kool-Aid die mijn Secret Pal Maijamirjami naar me gestuurd had. Ik gebruikte het artikel in Knitty over verven met Kool-Aid als richtlijn. En ik vond het erg leuk!

This week, I tried dyeing yarn for the first time. I used four of the six packs of Kool-Aid that my Secret Pal Maijamirjami had sent me, and of course a ball of blank ONline sock yarn. I used Knitty's Kool-Aid tutorial for guidance.

Ik had al vaker wol gezien die met Kool-Aid geverfd was, en vond die er altijd erg "zuurstokkerig" uitzien (niet vreemd, het is dan ook limonade...) en ik wou vooral uitproberen of ik de kleuren zo verzadigd en donker mogelijk kon maken. En dat is best wel gelukt, vind ik.

I had seen other yarn dyed with Kool-Aid and always found the colors rather "sugary" (no wonder, it's lemonade after all). So, my main goal was to try and make the colors as dark and saturated as possible. I think I succeeded in that.

Ik doop deze unieke en éénmalige kleur "Dora the Explorer". Want het zijn leuke, kinderlijke felle kleurtjes, en als Dora zelf handgebreide sokken zou dragen, dan zou dit wolletje een goeie kandidaat ervoor zijn.

I'm baptizing this unique colorway "Dora the Explorer". Because the colors are happy and childlike; if Dora would wear handknit socks, this yarn would be a great candidate, I think.

Ik heb m'n hele werkproces op foto gezet. Hier zie je een diavoorstelling ervan. Pas op: dit is geen handleiding... ik ben een beginner en heb vast een aantal fouten gemaakt!

Ik heb in elk geval één heel grote stommiteit begaan: bij het uitspoelen na het verven heb ik mijn hele streng in de war gebracht. Stom, stom, stom. Ik heb de streng uuuuuren aan een stuk ontward, in een wolk van snoepgeur. Mijn vriend durfde niet bij me in de buurt te komen, want ik zat te vloeken en te zuchten en was vreselijk boos op mezelf. Maar uiteindelijk is het goed gekomen.

In any case, I did ONE major stupid thing -- when rinsing the yarn after the dye job, I let my whole skein become one big tangled mess. That was SO dumb. I've spent an entire evening untangling the hank, of course surrounded by a pervasive cloud of sweet candy smell. My boyfriend, wisely, didn't come near me as I was cursing, sighing and generally being extremely pissed at myself. But in the end it turned out fine.

Ben ik nu door een virus gebeten? Zou ik het opnieuw doen? Ik vond het erg leuk om uit te proberen en wil het graag herhalen, maar ik denk niet dat ik er erg fanatiek in word. Het resultaat is een gemeleerd garen -- normaal niet iets waar ik zelf mee zou breien, dus volgende keer wil ik graag wel een (semi) uni kleurtje maken.

So, now, am I infected by the dyeing virus? Would I try this again? I loved it, had a lot of fun and would like to repeat it, but I don't think I'll become a fanatic dyer. The resulting skein is a variegated yarn, which I'm usually not a fan of, so next time I'd like to go for something (semi-)solid.

Zo weinig tijd / So little time...

Mijn hoofd loopt over van de goeie ideeën en breiplannen... dat gevoel kennen jullie vast ook wel! :-) Mijn wolvoorraad is de voorbije maanden gestadig gegroeid, en voor bijna alle wolletjes weet ik al precies wat de bestemming ervan moet worden. Zoveel mooie patronen en zo weinig tijd! Ik kom (een beetje) slaap tekort doordat de dagen te snel voorbij zijn. En ik moet mezelf echt bedwingen om niet aan 20 projecten tegelijk te beginnen.

These days, my head is overflowing with good knitting-related ideas and plans. I'm sure you all know how that feels! :-) My stash has grown exponentially during the last few months, and for most yarns I already have a very nice and interesting pattern in mind. So many beautiful things to knit, so many exciting techniques to try out, and so little time! I find myself chronically lacking sleep (it's not too bad, though, just that the days are too short) and I have trouble keeping myself from starting 20 projects simultaneously.

Als compromis heb ik mezelf toegestaan om aan vijf projecten tegelijk te werken. De "slapende" projecten tellen niet mee. :-D

As a compromise, I'm allowing myself to work on five projects simultaneously, hibernating projects not included (haha, Pikku-Kettu, I can't help thinking about your System ;-).

Over de Boyfriend Socks en mijn papa's Fancy Socks heb ik al eerder geblogd. Weinig nieuws, behalve dat de Boyfriend Socks (eindelijk) bijna af zijn en dat ik overweeg om de Fancy Sock uit te halen en met fijnere naalden opnieuw te beginnen: Trekking XXL is net iets dunner dan de meeste andere sokkengarens.

I've already blogged about the Boyfriend Socks and my dad's Fancy Socks. Not much news there, except that the Boyfriend Socks are (finally) almost ready and that I'm considering frogging the Fancy Sock In Progress in order to start again with slightly thinner needles, because Trekking XXL is a bit finer than most regular sock yarns.

Verder ben ik met een nieuwe Candle Flame sjaal begonnen. Ik vind dat motief fantastisch, maar zie mezelf nog geen driehoekige omslagdoek dragen, daarom brei ik het patroon in een parallellogram-vorm (meerderen aan de linkerkant, minderen aan de rechterkant). De wol is Lana Grossa Cool Wool 2000, hele zachte en rekbare merino van bij Lydialaine.



Furthermore, I've started a new Candle Flame scarf. I'm totally in love with that motif, but don't see myself wearing a triangular shawl, so I'm making it a parallellogram shape (increasing on one side, decreasing on the other). The yarn is Lana Grossa Cool Wool 2000: very soft and stretchy merino.

Een paar weken geleden kreeg ik een plotselinge ingeving: waarom moeten Pomatomus-sokken blauw zijn? En met een heerlijk felle rode streng Wollmeise-sokkenwol (kleur Granatapfel medium) ben ik aan een paar Tomatomi begonnen.



A few weeks ago, I got a sudden "revelation": why do Pomatomus socks necessarily need to be blue? With a lovely bright red hank of Wollmeise sock yarn (Granatapfel medium) I've started a pair of Tomatomi.

En op Ravelry zag ik toevallig de Hanami stole. Liefde op het eerste gezicht. Bij De Afstap in Amsterdam (wat een prachtige winkel, en op loopafstand van mijn nieuwe baan! Oh-oh...) kocht ik vier bolletjes lichtgrijze Rowan Kidsilk Night; zopas ben ik met de voorlopige opzetrij begonnen. Ik maak het "chaotische" kersenbloesempatroon aan beide uiteinden.

And on Ravelry I spotted the Hanami stole. Love at first sight. At De Afstap in Amsterdam (such a fabulous LYS! At walking distance from my new job -- uh-oh...) I bought four balls of light grey Rowan Kidsilk Night; I just started the provisional cast on. I intend to make the "chaotic" cherry blossom pattern on both sides of the stole.



Tussendoor heb ik ook een paar Saartjes Slofjes gemaakt voor mijn peetdochter en ben ik een grappig gehaakt "visnettasje" aan het afwerken. Knittingajour, herken je het garen? ;-) Mijn zonnebril heeft ook een nieuw jasje gekregen.



In the meanwhile, I also made a pair of Saartje's Bootees for my goddaughter, and I'm finishing a cheery crocheted fishnet market bag. Finally, my sunglasses have received a cheery summer coat.



Fijne vakantie gewenst aan iedereen die het nu (ook) iets rustiger aan doet!

Not-So-Secret Pals... (eng)

Secret Pal 10 is drawing to an end, and a few revelations have taken place...

My "downstream" pal was Pikku-Kettu, and my "upstream" pal was Maijamirjami ... both are Finnish knitters, both very nice people, and both very skilled (in different ways) in many things crafty. Do check out their blogs! It was lovely getting to know you both, ladies (I know that you read each other's blogs) and I hope we'll keep in touch for a long time to come!

Needless to say that I enjoyed this Secret Pal round (my first) very much. I loved making presents, I loved receiving them (of course) and I loved learning a bit more about crafts in Finland; apparently many kids learn to do crafts there from a young age, and this apparently results in (among others) interesting yarn production and, of course, many very skilled and dedicated crafters. At least, that's my impression so far! I've always had a soft spot for Scandinavia, and being matched with two Finnish ladies was therefore very fortunate, as far as I'm concerned.

Now, look at the lovely final package that I received from Maijamirjami...!



It had superb stamps on it (even one with Lordi, if I'm not mistaken). What a good way to start! And then, the contents... four balls of lovely, fluffy Drops Symphony; this yarn looks and feels like angora, but it's actually merino! And a pair of beautiful handknit fingerless gloves in the same 'old pink' color -- look at the finishing, and the lovely elegant cable on the little finger. Beautiful. There was also a keyring in old pink (Grumperina would call it periwinkle, I think), two bars of chocolate (yum! gone immediately!), a novel by Virginia Woolf and... a very elegant felted bag with lace! I'm very curious about that last one -- it's beautifully made, and would it be "found" or vintage lace, or even bobbin lace that Maijamirjami has made herself? I still have to find out.

In any case, my boyfriend can witness that I was in an exalted mood for hours afterwards :-)

Papa Noro

Een paar weken geleden was ik vlijtig aan een gestreepte sjaal aan het breien, geïnspireerd door dit kunststukje van Brooklyntweed. Materiaal: slechts twee bollen Noro Kureyon in kleur 163. Mijn vriend was vol bewondering voor het dubbele kleurverloop... en met veel liefde heb ik 'm dus de sjaal kado gedaan voor vaderdag! De voorbije week heb ik er snel nog even een paar Kolenya-wanten bij gebreid.

A few weeks ago, I was eagerly knitting a striped scarf, inspired by this fabulous piece by Brooklyntweed. Yarn = only two balls of Noro Kureyon in colorway 163. My boyfriend was admiring the very cool double gradient effect in the striping... and it was therefore a very logical decision to give him this scarf for Father's Day! I'm so happy that I've been able to give him a nice piece of knitting...
This week, I quickly complemented the scarf with a set of Kolenya fingerless gloves.

De wondermooie wol was een kadootje van mijn fabuleuze Secret Pal, MaijaMirjami (identiteit ontdekt na enig detectivewerk via Google)! Dank je wel! Na deze Noro-introductie ben ik zo verslingerd op deze wol geworden -- ik heb een paar extra bollen besteld bij Wolhalla om ook voor mezelf zo'n mooi setje te maken.

This beautiful yarn was a gift from my fabulous Secret Pal: MaijaMirjami (whose identity I discovered after some detective work via Google)! Thank you so much! After this Noro introduction I've become addicted to it; I just ordered a few extra balls at Wolhalla so that I can make myself such a nice scarf & gloves set as well.

10 nieuwtjes / 10 new things

Het is een hele tijd geleden dat ik nog "echt" geblogd heb, en ik heb een boel nieuwe dingen gemaakt en gedaan. Even een lijstje gemaakt, en ik heb zowaar 10 mededelingen!

It's been a while since I "really" blogged about my knitting and such -- and I've been doing and making quite a few new things. I made a list and I happen to have 10 things to say!

1. Socks / Anastasia



Vorige maand heb ik Anastasia-sokken gemaakt voor m'n mama (moederdag), met Colinette Jitterbug, kleur Copperbeech.

Last month I finished Anastasia socks for my mom (Mother's Day) with Colinette Jitterbug, colorway Copperbeech.

2. Socks / Black Rainbow



Daarna heb ik sokken voor mezelf afgewerkt -- een simpel patroon vanaf de teen, met "short row heel" (korterijhiel?). Sokkenwol van Storm op Zolder, kleur Zwarte Regenboog.

Next, I finished a pair for myself -- simple stockinette toe-up pattern with short row heel. Sock yarn by Storm op Zolder, colorway Black Rainbow.

3. Socks / Boyfriend Socks



Ik ben ook nog steeds druk bezig met een allereerste paar sokken voor Grote Lobbes. Grote Lobbes heeft Enorme Voeten (maat 44) en ik maak een paar Boyfriend Socks voor hem met zwarte Regia Silk. Het is een patroon over 80 steken, daarom duurt het zo lang!

I'm also still working on a first pair of handknit socks for my Big Man. Big Man has Huge Feet (European size 44) and I'm making him a pair of Boyfriend Socks with black Regia Silk. It's an 80-stitch pattern, so I think you can imagine why it takes me so long.

4. Socks / Papa's Fancy Socks



Voor mijn papa maak ik momenteel ook een paar. Geinspireerd op de vele foto's die ik op Flickr gezien heb van de Gentleman's Fancy Socks, een patroon in een boek van Nancy Bush. Het boek heb ik niet, maar het patroon ziet er vrij makkelijk uit. Ik maak een eigen interpretatie ervan.

For my dad, I'm also knitting socks at the moment. I'm inspired by the many photos I've seen on Flickr of the Gentleman's Fancy Socks, a pattern from a book by Nancy Bush. I don't own the book, but the pattern looks fairly straightforward and I'm making my own interpretation.

5. Scarf / Double Gradient Noro Scarf



Gisteren en eergisteren heb ik als een gek gebreid aan een kekke sjaal met streepjes in 1x1 rib. Gemaakt van 2 van de 3 bollen Noro Kureyon (kleur 163) die mijn Secret Pal me gegeven heeft.

Yesterday and the day before that, I have been knitting like crazy, on a super cool striped scarf in 1x1 rib. Made with 2 of the 3 balls of Noro Kureyon (colorway 163) that my Secret Pal has donated to me.

6. DIY Sock Blockers



Leve de HEMA! Met twee HEMA-placemats heb ik voor mezelf hele leuke sok-blockers gemaakt, volgens deze instructies.

With two placemats from HEMA, the Netherlands' coolest chain store, I made two sock blockers for myself, following these instructions.

7. Vintage buttons



Vorig weekend waren we op bezoek bij mijn ouders. Mijn moeder heeft een ongelooflijke collectie vintage knopen, de meeste dateren vanaf de jaren '50 tot nu. We hebben ze op kleur gesorteerd en ik heb foto's gemaakt van de collectie. Je kan hier op Flickr een diareeksje bekijken.

Last weekend, we have visited my parents. My mom owns an incredible vintage button collection (4 metal boxes full to the brim!), dating from the 1950s till present. We sorted a selection of them by color, and I made photos as a reminder. You can see a slide show on Flickr.

8. Ravelry!



Ik ben al een tijdje beta-gebruiker op Ravelry. De wachtlijst is nu enorm lang, maar voor een hele goede reden: het systeem wordt grondig getest en kan nog geen grote massa gebruikers aan, maar daar wordt hard aan gewerkt. Ravelry is echt geweldig. Het is een super-handige aanvulling op je blog en Flickr, kijk maar even naar deze rondleiding. Ik hoop dat meer mensen uit Europa Ravelry gaan gebruiken, zodat het grote overwicht van Amerikaanse garens en patronen wat getemperd wordt. Een aanrader.

For a few weeks now, I'm a Ravelry beta user. The waiting list is very long at this moment, but that's for a very good reason: the system is tested thoroughly and it can't handle huge masses of users yet, but the initiators are working really hard on that.
Ravelry is great. It's a super handy addition to blogging and Flickr, have a look at the guided tour for all the features. I sincerely hope that more people from Europe will start using it, so that the selection of yarns and patterns will become more balanced and less US-centered. I recommend this!

9. SP10 DIY dye kit



Deze week kreeg ik ook een superleuk pakketje van mijn Secret Pal: twee "witte" strengen wol (sokkenwol en een heerlijke wol-zijdemengeling) en zes pakjes Kool-Aid. Ik kan gaan verven!

This week, I also received a fun parcel from my Secret Pal: two "blank" balls of yarn (one sock yarn, one lovely silk-wool mixture) and six packs of Kool-Aid. I can start dyeing!

10. W.W.K.I.P. day

En morgen, 9 juni, is het World Wide Knit In Public Day (Wereldwijde Breien In Publiek Dag). Ik ga samen met een heleboel andere breisters naar het Vroesenpark in Rotterdam, met een grote schaal van mijn wereldberoemde tiramisu en met de Boyfriend Socks (zie boven). We gaan barbecuen. Allen welkom!

And tomorrow, 9 June, is World Wide Knit In Public Day. I'm joining many fellow knitters at the Vroesenpark in Rotterdam, accompanied by my world famous tiramisu and the Boyfriend Socks (see above). We're having a BBQ. Join us, it'll be fun!

Ik ben nu een paar dagen terug van vakantie... het was heerlijk en veel te kort. Tja.

Since a few days, I'm back from holidays and, as usual, it was fabulous and WAY too short. Oh well.

Een dag na onze thuiskomst zat er gelukkig als troost een heel leuk pakje in de bus, en wel uit Finland... van mijn Secret Pal uiteraard!
Blijkbaar hebben we heel wat gemeenschappelijk -- onder andere een onverbeterlijke sokkenverslaving. In het pakje zat:
- hele mooie kruidig-oranje sokkenwol (Sisu)
- lekker knallend rode wol in sportdikte (Maija)
- twee toffeerepen die ik al snel met veel smaak verorberde
- en bovenal een geweldig PAARS (!) paar Cable Twist Socks... ze zitten heerlijk en ik heb ze de voorbije (frissere) avonden al volop gedragen.

One day after our return, there was a lovely package in the mail. From Finland -- from my Secret Pal of course!
We have quite a few things in common -- including an obsession with sock knitting! Ha! So, the package contained
- some lovely spicy orange sock yarn (Sisu)
- very cool bright red sport weight Maija yarn (which is already whispering to me that it would like to become a nice pair of gloves)
- two yummy toffee bars which I promptly devoured...
- and, most importantly, a super pair of Cable Twist Socks, purple of course! I've worn them almost every (chilly) evening; they fit perfectly and feel great!

Op het brei- en handwerkfront heb ik verder zelf ook niet stilgezeten, maar daar blog ik binnenkort over.

On the knitting and crafts front I've also done a few things; I'll blog about these pretty soon.
