En de winnaars zijn ... / And the winners are ...

De loterij naar aanleiding van het 1-jarig bestaan van BreiBeestBlog is afgelopen... en de winnaars zijn bekend!

1. De hoofdprijs (Storm op Zolder sokkenwol en Manos del Uruguay 100% wol) gaat naar Maijamirjami in Finland - die ook mijn Secret Pal 10 was! Gefeliciteerd! Het is een leuk toeval, en ik zweer plechtig dat de loterij helemaal eerlijk verlopen is. Toch echt welverdiend. In haar commentaar vertelde Maijamirjami over haar favoriete breiproject: een traditionele trui naar Gotlands model voor haar echtgenoot, met vijf grijstinten en een schapenmotief. Klinkt erg mooi.
2. De tweede prijs, een streng Storm op Zolder wol voor dikkere pennen, is voor Lieveheersbeestje, die een erg leuk verhaal had over haar eerste breiproject op school: een speldenkussen voor rond je nek.
3. En de derde prijs gaat ook naar Finland: Muoriska is de gelukkige.

BreiBeestBlog is jarig! / Blogaversary

Bijna één jaar geleden, op 14 november 2006, publiceerde ik het eerste postje op BreiBeestBlog.

Sindsdien is er heel wat gebeurd; ik heb vele nieuwe breitechnieken geleerd, veel nieuwe projecten gemaakt, veel mooie soorten wol gaan appreciëren, en vooral veel leuke mensen leren kennen (virtueel of in het echt). Meer dan ooit is breien iets wat me veel vreugde brengt!

Almost one year ago, on November 14, 2006, I published my first post on BreiBeestBlog.

Since then, a lot has happened. I've learned so much about knitting; I've made numerous new projects; started to appreciate so many beautiful yarns; and, most of all, I've met many wonderful people (virtually or in the flesh). More than ever, knitting is a constant source of joy for me.

Om dit in stijl te vieren en om iedereen te danken voor alle feedback en commentaren, hou ik een grote verjaardagsloterij! Iedereen krijgt evenveel kans om mee te doen en te winnen. Om deel te nemen moet je alleen het volgende doen:

1. Laat bij dit postje een commentaar achter (waarbij je zeker je emailadres moet vermelden!)

De hoofdprijs bestaat uit een pakketje met een streng 100g natuurlijke sokkenwol van Storm op Zolder (kleur "Zeeschuim", prachtig zacht blauwgroen) en een streng 100g Manos del Uruguay 100% wol (voor naalden 5-6 mm, ongetwijnd, kleur 8891 wat een mix is van bruin-, grijstinten en een vleugje perzik).



The 1st prize is a package with two skeins: one 100g natural sock yarn by Storm in the Attic (color "Sea Foam" which is a beautiful, muted blue-green) and one 100g skein of Manos del Uruguay 100% wool, worsted weight. It's color 8891 (a mix of browns, grays, and some peachy pink) and a single ply.

De tweede prijs is een streng dikke getwijnde 100g Blue Faced Leicester, ook van Storm op Zolder. De kleur, "Zwaar", doet me heel erg aan chocolade-ijs met kersen denken (Cherry Garcia van Ben&Jerry's, iemand?). Dit wordt een hele mooie muts, een kek paar wanten... Ik denk dat je voor deze wol ook best naalden van ongeveer 5 mm gebruikt.



Second prize is a skein of 100g worsted weight Blue Faced Leicester, also from Storm in the Attic, our Rotterdam yarn lady. The color, "Heavy", reminds me of ice cream with chocolate and cherries (Cherry Garcia, anyone?). I think it'll make a gorgeous hat or some cool mittens.

Stokjes / Tagged

Ik heb twee stokjes gekregen van Yvonne! Dank je wel! (En jammer dat we elkaar niet ontmoet hebben op de SnB-dag, volgende keer beter!)
Het eerste stokje is een soort onderscheiding...

I was tagged twice by Yvonne. The first one is an award...


Ben ik best wel een beetje trots op, toch :-)
Nu is het altijd best moeilijk om te verzinnen aan wie ik het stokje doorgeef. Ik lees heel veel blogs, geniet van allemaal en zou eigenlijk iedereen dit stokje kunnen geven. Als ik iemand niet in het lijstje zet, dan is dat onterecht en jammer! Toch een paar namen van mensen die ik altijd als eerste aanklik in mijn RSS-lezer (omdat ik ze iets beter heb leren kennen intussen en/of omdat ik ze erg bijzonder vind): Puk, Yvon, Saskia (jonge mama en onze Rotterdamse Knitty-heldin), Deirdre, Maijamirjami en Pikku-Kettu (mijn lieve SP10s), de heerlijk gekke Knitters Uncensored-podcasters Elemmaciltur en Miss Bockstark (Cashyie heeft nog steeds geen blog), en Cosymakes wiens werk ik erg interessant en mooi vind.

Now, it's always extremely hard to think of a list of other bloggers to tag. I read so many blogs, and enjoy all of them. Actually, I want to tag everyone I read, because not listing someone is unfair and undeserved! Still, I'll try to make a list of people whose blogs I always select first when checking my RSS reader: Puk, Yvon, Saskia (young mom and our Rotterdam Knitty heroine!), Deirdre, Maijamirjami and Pikku-Kettu (my lovely SP10 partners), the crazy Knitters Uncensored podcasters Elemmaciltur and Miss Bockstark (Cashyie is still blogless, I think), and Cosymakes whose work I find very interesting and beautiful.

Dan was er nog een tweede stokje van Yvonne... het welbekende stokje waarbij je 8 willekeurige feiten over jezelf op een rijtje zet. Hier is het:

1. Ik ben een onverbeterlijke nagelbijter.
2. Mijn allerliefste lievelingsgerecht (en ik vind al heel veel dingen lekker) is échte Italiaanse spaghetti bolognese. Ik zou er speciaal voor naar Italië vliegen.
3. Ik heb ooit de opkomst van een nieuwe kunststroming van (vrij) dichtbij meegemaakt. Een paar van de kunstenaars in kwestie zijn relatief bekend geworden.
4. Ik hou helemaal niet van sporten. Geen enkele sport kan me echt bekoren.
5. Ik zou ooit wel eens (misschien zelfs permanent) in een woonboot, molen, radartoren, vuurtoren, echt ruw pakhuis, oud café of oude fabriek willen wonen.
6. Ik heb platvoeten. Geen last (meer) ervan, behalve dat het erg moeilijk is om schoenen te vinden die breed genoeg zijn.
7. Ik weet heel veel (of heb ooit heel veel geweten) over cactussen, kalligrafie, borstvoeding en het internet.
8. Ik geniet heel erg van nieuwe dingen leren.

Ik geef dit stokje door aan iedereen die er zin in heeft!

Here's my list:

1. I bite my nails and can't get rid of that nasty habit.
2. My all-time favorite food (and I love many foods!) is real Italian spaghetti bolognese. I'd fly to Italy just to eat that.
3. I've witnessed the rise of a new art genre from (relatively) close by. Some of the artists I've been in touch with have become pretty well-known in the art world.
4. I'm not fond of sports. There are no sports that I really like to practice or that I find interesting enough to follow.
5. One day, I'd love to live (permanently, even) in a house boat, a mill, radar tower, lighthouse, undeveloped warehouse, old cafe or old factory.
6. I have flat feet (pes planus / fallen arches). They don't cause me physical discomfort, but it's really difficult to find nice shoes that are wide enough.
7. I know (or have known) an awful lot about cacti, calligraphy, breastfeeding and the internet.
8. I love to (and deeply enjoy) learn(ing) new things.

Moe maar voldaan... / Tired but happy

Zaterdag was dé dag.



Heel veel Nederlandse breibloggers hebben er al heel veel leuks over geschreven. Ook ik vond het heerlijk. Veel geleerd, veel moois gezien, alleen jammer genoeg (vanwege een hele volle dag met 3 workshops) iets te veel als een kip zonder kop rondgelopen en daardoor veel te weinig met andere breisters kunnen kletsen. (Blijkt bijvoorbeeld dat ik tegenover Tijm in Yarnissima's workshop zat... en ik had geen idee. Duh. Hoi, Tijm! Gefeliciteerd met je welverdiende prijs!!)

O ja, en ik was 2 essentiele dingen vergeten: mijn Noro-sjaal (die me herkenbaar zou maken) en mijn fototoestel. Gelukkig toch nog wat basiskiekjes geschoten met m'n mobiel...



Voornemen: volgend jaar doe ik minder workshops en ga ik meer rondhangen!

Hét hoogtepunt was voor mij toch wel de workshop spintollen van Yvon en Constance. Ik kan nu (een beetje) spinnen! En het was heel leuk om (weliswaar kort en snel) met Yarnissima kennis te maken.



Verder ook wol gekocht, natuurlijk. Wat was er veel mooie, bijzondere wol! Mijn oogst: een hele grote streng Kauni EZ, een bolletje Noro Silk Garden voor een gestreepte peutersjaal, en een paar bruintinten Drops Alpaca, voor dat kleurenproject(je) dat er nu toch eindelijk aankomt. (Bij Storm op Zolder had ik op de handwerkbeurs in Den Bosch al een flinke smak geld uitgegeven :-)



A short summary... last Saturday was the Dutch Stitch 'n Bitch day: the largest knitting fair in the Netherlands. Many Dutch knitbloggers have already written about it; it was fun, fun, fun!
For me, the highlight of the day was a spinning workshop by fellow SnBRotterdam members Yvon and Constance -- I can spin (at least a little bit) with a spindle now! It was lovely meeting Yarnissima as well (although it was very short...). And of course I bought a few lovely yarns, including a large skein of Kauni Effektgarn and a few balls of brown Drops Alpaca for my first colorwork project.

Herfstig / Autumny

Lieve mensen! Nog 7 keer slapen en het is Stitch 'n Bitchdag! Jawel! Ik kan me voorstellen dat de standhouders en workshopleiders zich nu druk aan het voorbereiden en stressen zijn... en ik verheug me al helemaal op een hele drukke en volle dag met heel veel nieuws en moois en hopelijk veel ontmoetingen!

Ik was er snel bij en kon me inschrijven voor de volgende workshops:

• Japans breien met Kerstin Jonsson, om 10u45
• Spinnen met de spintol bij Constance, geassisteerd door Yvon, om 12u45
• Een mini-Yarnissima-sok breien bij Marjan, om 14u15. Kijk even wat voor moois Marjan voor ons in petto heeft...!

Als iemand van jullie bij dezelfde workshops zit, dan hoor ik dat graag, lijkt me leuk om even te kletsen! Ik zal op de Stitch 'n Bitchdag mijn nieuwe roze-rode Noro-sjaal dragen... dat maakt me vast erg herkenbaar. Tik me gerust op de schouder als jullie me tegenkomen en een praatje willen maken.

Next weekend, on 3 November, there will be the second Stitch 'n Bitch Day here in Rotterdam. It's the largest knitting-related event of the year; I'm going to follow several workshops (Japanese knitting; spindle spinning; and sock knitting by Yarnissima!). Oh boy, do I look forward to it!

Eén Ringwood Pattern sok (uit Knitting Vintage Socks van Nancy Bush) is klaar. Hij is te klein voor de persoon voor wie hij oorspronkelijk bedoeld was: mijn goeie vriend J., schoenmaat 42. Hij past perfect voor mij (schoenmaat 39). Voorbestemd en voor mezelf houden? Of de teen uithalen en langer maken? Ik heb nog niet beslist.



One Ringwood Pattern sock (from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush) is finished. Dilemma. It's too small for the intended recipient: my good friend J. who has shoe size 42. It fits my size 39 foot perfectly. Is this destiny? Should I keep these for myself? Or frog the toes and make them longer? Haven't decided yet.

Ik vond dat Ringwood-patroon trouwens zo leuk dat ik voor zoontjelief een schattige peuterversie aan het maken ben. Met het (grote) restant Wollmeise Granatapfel dat over is / zal zijn van mijn (onafgewerkte) Pomatomussen.



By the way, I like(d) this Ringwood pattern so much that I'm making a cute toddler version for my little boy. With the (large amount of) leftovers of Wollmeise Granatapfel from my Pomatomi (which suffer from Second Sock Syndrome).

Zoonlief heeft nu ook een setje muts + wanten, naar een (generiek) patroon van Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Echter, hij vindt ze maar niks en trekt ze meteen uit. Ah, peuters! :-))



My dear son has also received a pair of handknit mittens and a matching hat, after a generic pattern by Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Alas, he doesn't appreciate them and tears them off after one second or so. Ah, those joyful toddlers! :-))

Mijn meisjes-streepjes-Noro-sjaal is af! Roze! Met frutsels (fringe in het Engels)! Deze zal ik dragen op de Stitch 'n Bitch dag.



My girly striped Noro scarf is done! It's very pink! With a fringe! I'll wear it at the Stitch 'n Bitch Day.

En last but not least: ik maak eindelijk een trui voor mezelf, de Sunrise Circle Jacket van Kate Gilbert. Ik hoop dat ik het volhoud. Ik hoop dat de maat goed zal zijn en dat hij er leuk zal uitzien. Wens me veel sterkte en volhardendheid!



And last but not least: I'm finally making a sweater for myself. The Sunrise Circle Jacket by Kate Gilbert. I hope I'll find the courage and persistance to finish it. I hope it'll fit and will be flattering. Wish me luck and strength!

Tenslotte: ik heb de laatste tijd weinig gereageerd op andere blogs en op commentaren. Ik heb (door drukte, herfst, weinig slaap, verkoudheid??) erg weinig energie daarvoor, maar weet dat ik jullie blogs nog steeds erg gretig lees en jullie commentaren heel erg apprecieer! Hopelijk, met een nieuwe energiestoot, doe ik eens een stevige inhaalslag.

Finally -- the last weeks, I have left very few comments on other people's blogs and have reacted too little on your comments and messages and remarks. For some reason or another (too busy? Autumn? too tired? snotty nose and sore throat?) I don't have much energy for that, but do know that I read all your blogs with great interest and that I do appreciate your comments very much! Hopefully a new bout of energy will follow soon so that I can catch up.

Estonian goodness (eng)

This week, I received a huge box in the mail...



Turned out to be a surprise from my Secret Pal 11, Liia, from Tallinn (Estonia)! We already had been mailing back and forth a bit, and Liia had made me pretty curious with some questions about lace vs. colorwork knitting.

Her package clearly went into the colorwork / fair isle direction, look at this:





Two books about traditional Estonian mittens, by Aino Praakli, a researcher who has re-knit mittens from museum collections and has published the patterns. I didn't know much about Estonian mittens before, and I have already spent several hours marvelling at the examples in these booklets; the mitterns look very pure and modern, while incorporating traditional techniques and motifs. I love these patterns very, very much... a good motivation to get started with colorwork soon!

Liia's package also included three (!) bars of chocolate and marzipan (delicious and all gone, of course!) and some other lovely goods:



A ball of cotton, a bag with beautiful colorful glass beads, a greeting card from Tallinn AND a huuuge ball of rainbow-colored wool. It can be used for knitting + felting (I think this would make a lovely bag!) or for spinning; I'm going to follow a drop spindle workshop on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day on 3 November in Rotterdam so this could become my first handspun as well :-)



In any case, this was a very special package full of beautiful, interesting gifts... I've enjoyed getting a taste of Estonia through it! Thank you, Liia!

Pfoei, het is hectisch in huize Breibeest. Veel werk, veel activiteiten daarbuiten, veel pendelen... en veel te weinig tijd om over brei- en haakprojecten te schrijven. Phew, hectic times in the Breibeest household. Busy at work, busy with other activities, busy with travelling from and to work. And therefore, too little time to write and comment about knitting. Om te beginnen: een paar vergeten FO's uit de oude doos.

To start: a few forgotten FOs that I found when cleaning our wardrobe.

Glimmende roze muts. Staat me niet goed, maar is wel leuk, maat pubermeisje of klein vrouwenhoofd, wil iemand 'm?



Glossy pink hat. Doesn't flatter me, but it's cute for someone else! Size teenage girl or small woman's head; does anyone want it?

Vliegeniersmuts in acryl. Hele leuke constructie, maar niet flatterend. En die acryl, brr.



Aviator cap in acrylic. Cool construction (short rows), but not flattering. And that acrylic... shudder.

De Trekking Pro Natura sokken (een patroon van Nancy Bush) vorderen langzaam; ik word er erg blij van want ze zien er heel elegant uit aan de voet.



The Trekking Pro Natura socks (a Nancy Bush pattern) are progressing slowly. They make me pretty happy, because they look very elegant when worn.

Een gestreepte Noro-sjaal. Een tijdje geleden had ik een blauwe gemaakt voor m'n vriend, en nu een roze voor mezelf!



A striped Noro scarf. Some time ago, I had made a blue one for my boyfriend; now I'm making myself a pink one!

Onze kleine man (2 jaar) krijgt binnenkort lekker warme merino handschoenen en een bijpassende muts.



Our little one (2 years old) will soon receive nice and warm, merino mittens and a matching hat.

En voor een stijlvolle vriendin (die normaal alleen zwart draagt) maak ik deze handwarmers, als verjaardagskado.



And for a stylish friend (who normally only wears black) I'm making these hand warmers as a birthday gift.
