Herfstig / Autumny

Lieve mensen! Nog 7 keer slapen en het is Stitch 'n Bitchdag! Jawel! Ik kan me voorstellen dat de standhouders en workshopleiders zich nu druk aan het voorbereiden en stressen zijn... en ik verheug me al helemaal op een hele drukke en volle dag met heel veel nieuws en moois en hopelijk veel ontmoetingen!

Ik was er snel bij en kon me inschrijven voor de volgende workshops:

• Japans breien met Kerstin Jonsson, om 10u45
• Spinnen met de spintol bij Constance, geassisteerd door Yvon, om 12u45
• Een mini-Yarnissima-sok breien bij Marjan, om 14u15. Kijk even wat voor moois Marjan voor ons in petto heeft...!

Als iemand van jullie bij dezelfde workshops zit, dan hoor ik dat graag, lijkt me leuk om even te kletsen! Ik zal op de Stitch 'n Bitchdag mijn nieuwe roze-rode Noro-sjaal dragen... dat maakt me vast erg herkenbaar. Tik me gerust op de schouder als jullie me tegenkomen en een praatje willen maken.

Next weekend, on 3 November, there will be the second Stitch 'n Bitch Day here in Rotterdam. It's the largest knitting-related event of the year; I'm going to follow several workshops (Japanese knitting; spindle spinning; and sock knitting by Yarnissima!). Oh boy, do I look forward to it!

Eén Ringwood Pattern sok (uit Knitting Vintage Socks van Nancy Bush) is klaar. Hij is te klein voor de persoon voor wie hij oorspronkelijk bedoeld was: mijn goeie vriend J., schoenmaat 42. Hij past perfect voor mij (schoenmaat 39). Voorbestemd en voor mezelf houden? Of de teen uithalen en langer maken? Ik heb nog niet beslist.



One Ringwood Pattern sock (from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush) is finished. Dilemma. It's too small for the intended recipient: my good friend J. who has shoe size 42. It fits my size 39 foot perfectly. Is this destiny? Should I keep these for myself? Or frog the toes and make them longer? Haven't decided yet.

Ik vond dat Ringwood-patroon trouwens zo leuk dat ik voor zoontjelief een schattige peuterversie aan het maken ben. Met het (grote) restant Wollmeise Granatapfel dat over is / zal zijn van mijn (onafgewerkte) Pomatomussen.



By the way, I like(d) this Ringwood pattern so much that I'm making a cute toddler version for my little boy. With the (large amount of) leftovers of Wollmeise Granatapfel from my Pomatomi (which suffer from Second Sock Syndrome).

Zoonlief heeft nu ook een setje muts + wanten, naar een (generiek) patroon van Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Echter, hij vindt ze maar niks en trekt ze meteen uit. Ah, peuters! :-))



My dear son has also received a pair of handknit mittens and a matching hat, after a generic pattern by Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Alas, he doesn't appreciate them and tears them off after one second or so. Ah, those joyful toddlers! :-))

Mijn meisjes-streepjes-Noro-sjaal is af! Roze! Met frutsels (fringe in het Engels)! Deze zal ik dragen op de Stitch 'n Bitch dag.



My girly striped Noro scarf is done! It's very pink! With a fringe! I'll wear it at the Stitch 'n Bitch Day.

En last but not least: ik maak eindelijk een trui voor mezelf, de Sunrise Circle Jacket van Kate Gilbert. Ik hoop dat ik het volhoud. Ik hoop dat de maat goed zal zijn en dat hij er leuk zal uitzien. Wens me veel sterkte en volhardendheid!



And last but not least: I'm finally making a sweater for myself. The Sunrise Circle Jacket by Kate Gilbert. I hope I'll find the courage and persistance to finish it. I hope it'll fit and will be flattering. Wish me luck and strength!

Tenslotte: ik heb de laatste tijd weinig gereageerd op andere blogs en op commentaren. Ik heb (door drukte, herfst, weinig slaap, verkoudheid??) erg weinig energie daarvoor, maar weet dat ik jullie blogs nog steeds erg gretig lees en jullie commentaren heel erg apprecieer! Hopelijk, met een nieuwe energiestoot, doe ik eens een stevige inhaalslag.

Finally -- the last weeks, I have left very few comments on other people's blogs and have reacted too little on your comments and messages and remarks. For some reason or another (too busy? Autumn? too tired? snotty nose and sore throat?) I don't have much energy for that, but do know that I read all your blogs with great interest and that I do appreciate your comments very much! Hopefully a new bout of energy will follow soon so that I can catch up.

Estonian goodness (eng)

This week, I received a huge box in the mail...



Turned out to be a surprise from my Secret Pal 11, Liia, from Tallinn (Estonia)! We already had been mailing back and forth a bit, and Liia had made me pretty curious with some questions about lace vs. colorwork knitting.

Her package clearly went into the colorwork / fair isle direction, look at this:





Two books about traditional Estonian mittens, by Aino Praakli, a researcher who has re-knit mittens from museum collections and has published the patterns. I didn't know much about Estonian mittens before, and I have already spent several hours marvelling at the examples in these booklets; the mitterns look very pure and modern, while incorporating traditional techniques and motifs. I love these patterns very, very much... a good motivation to get started with colorwork soon!

Liia's package also included three (!) bars of chocolate and marzipan (delicious and all gone, of course!) and some other lovely goods:



A ball of cotton, a bag with beautiful colorful glass beads, a greeting card from Tallinn AND a huuuge ball of rainbow-colored wool. It can be used for knitting + felting (I think this would make a lovely bag!) or for spinning; I'm going to follow a drop spindle workshop on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day on 3 November in Rotterdam so this could become my first handspun as well :-)



In any case, this was a very special package full of beautiful, interesting gifts... I've enjoyed getting a taste of Estonia through it! Thank you, Liia!

Update

Pfoei, het is hectisch in huize Breibeest. Veel werk, veel activiteiten daarbuiten, veel pendelen... en veel te weinig tijd om over brei- en haakprojecten te schrijven. Phew, hectic times in the Breibeest household. Busy at work, busy with other activities, busy with travelling from and to work. And therefore, too little time to write and comment about knitting. Om te beginnen: een paar vergeten FO's uit de oude doos.

To start: a few forgotten FOs that I found when cleaning our wardrobe.

Glimmende roze muts. Staat me niet goed, maar is wel leuk, maat pubermeisje of klein vrouwenhoofd, wil iemand 'm?



Glossy pink hat. Doesn't flatter me, but it's cute for someone else! Size teenage girl or small woman's head; does anyone want it?

Vliegeniersmuts in acryl. Hele leuke constructie, maar niet flatterend. En die acryl, brr.



Aviator cap in acrylic. Cool construction (short rows), but not flattering. And that acrylic... shudder.

De Trekking Pro Natura sokken (een patroon van Nancy Bush) vorderen langzaam; ik word er erg blij van want ze zien er heel elegant uit aan de voet.



The Trekking Pro Natura socks (a Nancy Bush pattern) are progressing slowly. They make me pretty happy, because they look very elegant when worn.

Een gestreepte Noro-sjaal. Een tijdje geleden had ik een blauwe gemaakt voor m'n vriend, en nu een roze voor mezelf!



A striped Noro scarf. Some time ago, I had made a blue one for my boyfriend; now I'm making myself a pink one!

Onze kleine man (2 jaar) krijgt binnenkort lekker warme merino handschoenen en een bijpassende muts.



Our little one (2 years old) will soon receive nice and warm, merino mittens and a matching hat.

En voor een stijlvolle vriendin (die normaal alleen zwart draagt) maak ik deze handwarmers, als verjaardagskado.



And for a stylish friend (who normally only wears black) I'm making these hand warmers as a birthday gift.

Eerste stappen / First steps

Tot voorbije vrijdagavond was een naaimachine een vreemd en beangstigend object voor me. Maar op zaterdagochtend is dat veranderd: toen had ik mijn eerste les bij het Naaicafé.

Until last Friday evening, a sewing machine was a foreign and slightly frightening object for me. But on Saturday morning this was about to change, as I was then having my first sewing lesson at Rotterdam's brand new Naaicafé (sewing cafe).



Niets dan lof voor Caroline Vogel, de uitbaatster van het cafe en onze naaidocent. In twee uur tijd had ze ons de basics van de naaimachine uitgelegd en hadden we allemaal (7 cursisten -- leeftijd van 21 tot 50(?), 6 vrouwen en 1 man, alle kleuren van de regenboog) een basic tasje met voering in elkaar geknutseld. Tijdens de komende 9 lessen gaan we nog een rok, broek, top en blouse/hemd maken.

Praise and bless our gifted teacher, Caroline Vogel, who is also the initiator of the sewing cafe. In two hours, she had explained the basics of a sewing machine; and she let us all make a small, simple lined bag. (We were 7 people, aged 21-50 (?), 6 ladies and one guy, all colors of the rainbow.) During the next lessons we'll make a skirt, a pair of trousers, a top and a blouse/shirt.

Ik ben die cursus vooral uit nieuwsgierigheid gaan volgen. Is het wel wat voor me? Vind ik het wel leuk om met de naaimachine te werken? Ben ik geen enorme kluns ermee? Stiekem hoop ik wel ooit kleren voor mezelf te maken... maar eerst moet je natuurlijk te weten komen of zoiets wel je kop thee is. Na de eerste les was ik zo enthousiast en vol zelfvertrouwen dat ik vandaag op m'n oude Singer naaimachine uit de jaren '80 een oefenproject gemaakt heb, de "tool roll" uit het boek Simple Sewing van Lotta Jansdotter.



I've started this course out of curiosity -- do I find sewing fun? Do I like working with a sewing machine? Am I not too clumsy for it? Deep inside, I hope to make my own clothing some day; but first, of course, I need to know if it's my cup of tea in the first place. And, well, after this first lesson I felt so energized and confident that I've undertaken a practice project on my old 1980s Singer. I've tried the tool roll from Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing.



Nu hebben mijn sokkennaalden een handig eigen tasje. Gemaakt met goedkoop katoen van bij IKEA; zeker niet perfect, maar ik ben er tevreden mee. Hopelijk blijf ik het even leuk vinden!



Now my DPNs have their own handy case. Made with cheap IKEA cotton and absolutely not perfect. But I had fun and it makes me happy. Hopefully I'll stay motivated!

Urchin

De nieuwe Knitty is er! En hij staat bomvol patronen die ik erg mooi en draagbaar vind: Roam en Neiman zijn precies het soort truitjes waarnaar ik al op zoek was; ik ben ook helemaal verliefd op de Muir-omslagdoek.


The new Knitty is up! It's chock-full of patterns that I find beautiful and very wearable: Roam and Neiman are exactly the kind of sweaters that I've been looking for, and I'm totally in love with the Muir wrap.

En soms gebeurt het gewoon dat een paar puzzelstukjes op hun plaats vallen: een paar hele mooie bollen wol in je stash waarvoor je geen bestemming had, en opeens vind je het perfecte patroon. Dat overkwam me met Rowan Country en Urchin.



And sometimes it just happens that a few pieces of a puzzle suddenly fall together and match. Several balls of beautiful stash yarn had no good destination, and then, poof!, you find the perfect pattern. This has just happened to me: with Rowan Country and Urchin.



Vorig jaar kocht ik 3 bollen Rowan Country op de Stitch 'n Bitchdag. Prachtige superdikke 100% wol in groen- en bruintinten, subtiel zelfstrepend. Maar net te weinig voor een sjaal. Een paar keer een patroon geprobeerd, weer uitgehaald... en uiteindelijk weggelegd. Jammer. En toen zag ik opeens de Urchin-muts van Ysolda Teague (een erg getalendeerde, jonge Schotse ontwerpster) in de nieuwe Knitty. Helemaal perfect.



Last year, I had bought 3 balls of Rowan Country on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day in Rotterdam. Lovely super bulky yarn, 100% wool, in green and brown, subtly self-striping. But not enough for a scarf. I had tried several patterns, frogged and frogged again, and, frustrated, buried the yarn deep in my stash. Such a pity. And suddenly, there was Urchin, a tam / beret pattern by the very talented Ysolda Teague, in the new Knitty. Perfect!



Ik word helemaal vrolijk van dit mutsje! Want:

1. het was erg leuk om te maken; ik kan dit patroon aanbevelen voor allerlei "gekke" garens, ook dikke handgesponnen experimenten;
2. het ging ontzettend snel (zo'n 4 tot 5 uur gebreid, en ik ben een nogal trage breister);
   
3. het past perfect (ik maakte maat L maar deed 7 i.p.v. 8 "spieën");
   
4. het past helemaal bij me, model en kleur en alles;
5. het kleurt ontzettend mooi bij mijn nieuwe bruine duffelcoat;
6. en ik heb nog ruim een bolletje wol over, voor een bijpassende mini-sjaal (neckwarmer).

This beret / tam makes me totally happy! Because:

1. it was so much fun to make! I can recommend this pattern for all kinds of "crazy" bulky yarns, including strange handspun experiments;
2. it went super-fast (4 to 5 hours, and I'm a slow knitter);
3. it fits perfectly (I made size L but did only 7 wedges instead of 8);
4. it's very much "me" (model and color and everything);
5. it matches my brand new brown duffel coat;
6. and I still have more than 1 ball left, good for a matching neckwarmer.
   

Naaicafé / Sewing Cafe

Er werd al heel wat over heen en weer gemaild, maar ik zag het nog niet op breiblogs: er komt een heus naaicafé in Rotterdam!

Het café is een initiatief van Caroline Vogel. Je kan er binnenlopen, een kopje koffie drinken en een naaimachine huren voor kleine en grotere klusjes (zoals een zoompje leggen). Er komt ook een kelder met allerlei meubilair en materiaal om te vilten. En een heleboel cursussen!

On 15 September (this weekend), a sewing café will open its doors in Rotterdam! It's an open sewing atelier where you can drop by, order a cup of coffee or tea, and hire a sewing machine for an hour or longer. There's also a felting studio in the basement and there will be various courses. I think I'll go for the beginners' sewing course on Saturday mornings! Yay!

Libelle's Breiboek (1949) / Vintage patterns from 1949

Weinig nieuws op het gebied van breiprojecten... het dekentje voor mijn zoontje vordert langzaam en ik heb net, in dezelfde dikke merino-acrylmengeling, een spiraalsjaal gehaakt en een paar supersokken gebreid.



Not much news on the UFO front. The Big Boy Blanket is slowly growing; in the same bulky merino-acrylic mix I've made two quick projects: a crocheted spiral scarf and a pair of very thick homey socks to warm my poor icy feet.

Eigenlijk wil ik al een tijdje schrijven over een mooie vondst -- een breiboek uit 1949.



But in fact, I've been wanting to write about a nice thrift find for some time: a knitting pattern book from 1949.



Ik hou zelf erg veel van de kledingstijl uit die periode, erg elegant vind ik die. Zelf kleding breien (en uithalen, en met de gebruikte wol opnieuw nieuwe dingen maken) was in die naaoorlogse periode waarschijnlijk voor de meeste (huis)vrouwen bittere noodzaak. De patronen uit die tijd werden gebreid met erg fijne wol en naalden (ongeveer zoals de huidige sokkenwol!). Maar daardoor, en vanwege de mooie vormen, stekenpatronen en detaillering, ziet de kleding er ook vaak echt verfijnd uit.



I really love that era's fashion style. I find it extremely elegant. Probably, knitting (and recycling yarn) was a bare necessity for women in those years shortly after the war. Patterns usually called for fine yarn and needles, comparable to our current sock yarns. But because of that, and because of the great stitch patterns, shaping and detailing, the clothing usually looks very refined.

Soms is het ook gewoon grappig.



And sometimes, it's just downright funny.



Het breiboek dat ik kocht, hoorde blijkbaar bij het tijdschrift Libelle. Interessant om te vernemen dat dat in die tijd al bestond!

The knitting book I've bought was apparently published as a counterpart to the Dutch-language popular women's magazine Libelle -- which still exists today.

Dit zijn een paar van mijn favorieten uit het boekje:



Above and below are a few of my favorites from the pattern booklet.



De meeste patronen zijn geschreven voor een borstomtrek rond de 90 tot 98 cm. Mijn buste is iets omvangrijker (zo'n 105 cm) en ik zit me af te vragen of ik de patronen in het boekje eenvoudig zou kunnen aanpassen door met een iets lossere stekenverhouding te werken. Of zou ik het hele ontwerp opnieuw moeten berekenen? Heeft iemand daar ervaring mee?

Most of the patterns are written for a 90 to 98 cm bust. Mine is slightly larger (approx. 105 cm). I was wondering if I would be able to easily adapt the patterns in the booklet by simply using a looser gauge. Or would it be better to entirely recalculate the designs? Does someone have experience with that?
