Thank you...

Secret Pal 11 goodness!

I'm starting this post with a photo; it speaks for itself, doesn't it? :-)

Last week (bad blogger I am!) I received a gorgeous package from my Secret Pal 11, who is not so secret anymore: Liia from Tallinn in Estonia -- her blog is http://kasitoo.blogspot.com. Again, Liia has spoilt me with a pile of wonderful stuff: a crocheted and felted scarf-wrap, blue Estonian wool yarn, sock yarn, a set of bag handles (that's great, I've been wanting to make a bag for a long time already!), two beautiful soft balls of "preyarn" (unspun yarn) for felting, a booklet on Estonian culture, another booklet on Estonian craft traditions, and a package with polymer clay.

I love everything... it's perfect stuff for me, as it is not the kind of things I would usually find in stores here: there are many new discoveries. The preyarn, for example: I've seen things that people have made with it, and it's gorgeous. I would love to make a felted hat and bag for myself soon! And the polymer clay is a fun one too: I used to work with that a lot when I was a teenager (I made jewelry) and I became really, really nostalgic receiving this. It'll be so much fun to give it a try again.

Thank you, Liia, for being such a great swap partner!

My own "spoilee" will not be announced yet. She is waiting for her last package -- I have been a bit late in sending it (my fault!) but it should have almost reached her. I can already reveal a little itty bitty thingy: she is a Scandinavian and lives waaaay up North, above the Polar Circle. Brr.

Just a short announcement to end -- I'm very busy with work these days, have to finish a large project before New Year and, except for announcing my "downstream" Secret Pal, will quit blogging for a month or so. Dear readers and knitting friends, may I already wish you all a very nice Christmas and New Year? Enjoy the festivities, I'm looking forward to writing again in 2008!

And the winners are ...

Winners of my blog contest!

The lottery for this blog's first anniversary is over... and the winners are to be announced!
  1. The FIRST PRIZE (Storm op Zolder sock yarn + Manos del Uruguay wool) will go to Maijamirjami in Finland - who was also my SP10! Congratulations! I solemnly swear that the drawing was 100% random... but I do think that the prize is well-deserved!
Maijamirjami's most beautiful knitting project is, and I quote her, a "sweater I made for my husband (boyfriend at the time) after a traditional Gotlandic model with 5 shades of gray and small sheep" ...
  2. The second prize, a skein of Storm op Zolder worsted weight handpainted yarn, goes to Lieveheersbeestje, who told a lovely story about her first knitting project - a pincushion roll that she made in school.
  3. And the third prize goes to Finland as well: congratulations, Muoriska! I know you indicated a preference for the second prize yarn... but this is how the drawing turned out! The ONline yarn is lovely as well, I can tell you.
Gefeliciteerd! Congratulations!

BreiBeestBlog is jarig! / Blogaversary

Almost one year ago, on November 14, 2006, I published my first post on BreiBeestBlog.

Since then, a lot has happened. I've learned so much about knitting; I've made numerous new projects; started to appreciate so many beautiful yarns; and, most of all, I've met many wonderful people (virtually or in the flesh). More than ever, knitting is a constant source of joy for me.

To celebrate this in style, and to thank everyone for your lovely feedback and comments, I'm having a large anniversary lottery! All participants will have an equal chance to win a prize. To take part, you only have to do the following things:
  1. Leave a comment at the bottom of this post (don't forget to mention your email address or another way through which I can trace you!)
  2. In your comment, tell us what you think is the most beautiful piece of knitting you've ever made. If you have photographs or a story about it, feel free to add a link to your blog, website, Ravelry or Flickr.
That's all, folks! Comments for this lottery will be accepted until November 18, 2007, at 12AM CET (next Sunday, midnight in my time zone). My innocent and totally impartial two-year-old son will draw the three winners, whose names will be announced during the week of November 19.

And I think the three prizes are really cool, if you allow me to boast a bit :-)

Blogaversary contest, 1st prize!

The 1st prize is a package with two skeins: one 100g natural sock yarn by Storm in the Attic (color "Sea Foam" which is a beautiful, muted blue-green) and one 100g skein of Manos del Uruguay 100% wool, worsted weight. It's color 8891 (a mix of browns, grays, and some peachy pink) and a single ply.

Blogaversary contest, 2nd prize!

Second prize is a skein of 100g worsted weight Blue Faced Leicester, also from Storm in the Attic, our Rotterdam yarn lady. The color, "Heavy", reminds me of ice cream with chocolate and cherries (Cherry Garcia, anyone?). I think it'll make a gorgeous hat or some cool mittens.

Blogaversary contest, 3rd prize!

Third prize is a ball of 100g ONline Supersocke 100, special color 909 which is a mix of browns, grays and off-white. For a nice pair of men's socks?

Doe mee! Men zegge het voort! :-)

Participate & spread the word!

Stokjes / Tagged

I was tagged twice by Yvonne. The first one is an award...

This is one to be proud of, isn't it?
Now, it's always extremely hard to think of a list of other bloggers to tag. I read so many blogs, and enjoy all of them. Actually, I want to tag everyone I read, because not listing someone is unfair and undeserved! Still, I'll try to make a list of people whose blogs I always select first when checking my RSS reader: Puk, Yvon, Saskia (young mom and our Rotterdam Knitty heroine!), Deirdre, Maijamirjami and Pikku-Kettu (my lovely SP10 partners), the crazy Knitters Uncensored podcasters Elemmaciltur and Miss Bockstark (Cashyie is still blogless, I think), and Cosymakes whose work I find very interesting and beautiful.

  4. Ik hou helemaal niet van sporten. Geen enkele sport kan me echt bekoren.
  5. Ik zou ooit wel eens (misschien zelfs permanent) in een woonboot, molen, radartoren, vuurtoren, echt ruw pakhuis, oud café of oude fabriek willen wonen.

Then there was a second "tag" from Yvonne -- the famous one where you list 8 random facts about yourself.
The Rules: Once tagged, you must link to the person who tagged you. Then post the rules before your list, and list 8 random things about yourself. At the end of the post, you must tag and link to 8 other people, visit their sites, and leave a comment letting them know they’ve been tagged.
Here's my list:
  1. I bite my nails and can't get rid of that nasty habit.
  2. My all-time favorite food (and I love many foods!) is real Italian spaghetti bolognese. I'd fly to Italy just to eat that.
  3. I've witnessed the rise of a new art genre from (relatively) close by. Some of the artists I've been in touch with have become pretty well-known in the art world.
  4. I'm not fond of sports. There are no sports that I really like to practice or that I find interesting enough to follow.
  5. One day, I'd love to live (permanently, even) in a house boat, a mill, radar tower, lighthouse, undeveloped warehouse, old cafe or old factory.
  6. I have flat feet (pes planus / fallen arches). They don't cause me physical discomfort, but it's really difficult to find nice shoes that are wide enough.
  7. I know (or have known) an awful lot about cacti, calligraphy, breastfeeding and the internet.
  8. I love to (and deeply enjoy) learn(ing) new things.
With this one, I'm tagging anyone who wants to give this a shot as well.

Moe maar voldaan... / Tired but happy

Zaterdag was dé dag.

Yarnissima preparing for the workshop

Kauni Effektgarn EZ

A short summary... last Saturday was the Dutch Stitch 'n Bitch day: the largest knitting fair in the Netherlands. Many Dutch knitbloggers have already written about it; it was fun, fun, fun!
For me, the highlight of the day was a spinning workshop by fellow SnBRotterdam members Yvon and Constance -- I can spin (at least a little bit) with a spindle now! It was lovely meeting Yarnissima as well (although it was very short...). And of course I bought a few lovely yarns, including a large skein of Kauni Effektgarn and a few balls of brown Drops Alpaca for my first colorwork project.

Herfstig / Autumny

Lieve mensen!

Next weekend, on 3 November, there will be the second Stitch 'n Bitch Day here in Rotterdam. It's the largest knitting-related event of the year; I'm going to follow several workshops (Japanese knitting; spindle spinning; and sock knitting by Yarnissima!). Oh boy, do I look forward to it!

And here's a quick overview of my knitting projects; click on the pictures for more info!

A serious dilemma.

One Ringwood Pattern sock (from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush) is finished. Dilemma. It's too small for the intended recipient: my good friend J. who has shoe size 42. It fits my size 39 foot perfectly. Is this destiny? Should I keep these for myself? Or frog the toes and make them longer? Haven't decided yet.

Toddler's Half Hose in Ringwood Pattern

By the way, I like(d) this Ringwood pattern so much that I'm making a cute toddler version for my little boy. With the (large amount of) leftovers of Wollmeise Granatapfel from my Pomatomi (which suffer from Second Sock Syndrome).

Ah, peuters! :-))

Mittens and matching hat for toddler

My dear son has also received a pair of handknit mittens and a matching hat, after a generic pattern by Ann Budd, in Lang Merino. Alas, he doesn't appreciate them and tears them off after one second or so. Ah, those joyful toddlers! :-))

Mijn meisjes-streepjes-Noro-sjaal is af! Roze!

Noro Scarf = FO!

My girly striped Noro scarf is done! It's very pink! With a fringe! I'll wear it at the Stitch 'n Bitch Day.

Sunrise Circle Jacket, UFO, back, in progress

And last but not least: I'm finally making a sweater for myself. The Sunrise Circle Jacket by Kate Gilbert. I hope I'll find the courage and persistance to finish it. I hope it'll fit and will be flattering. Wish me luck and strength!

Finally -- the last weeks, I have left very few comments on other people's blogs and have reacted too little on your comments and messages and remarks. For some reason or another (too busy? Autumn? too tired? snotty nose and sore throat?) I don't have much energy for that, but do know that I read all your blogs with great interest and that I do appreciate your comments very much! Hopefully a new bout of energy will follow soon so that I can catch up.

Estonian goodness (eng)

This week, I received a huge box in the mail...

First SP11 package

Turned out to be a surprise from my Secret Pal 11, Liia, from Tallinn (Estonia)! We already had been mailing back and forth a bit, and Liia had made me pretty curious with some questions about lace vs. colorwork knitting.

Her package clearly went into the colorwork / fair isle direction, look at this:

Aino Praakli, Kirikindad I and II

Aino Praakli, Patterned Mittens: looking inside

Two books about traditional Estonian mittens, by Aino Praakli, a researcher who has re-knit mittens from museum collections and has published the patterns. I didn't know much about Estonian mittens before, and I have already spent several hours marvelling at the examples in these booklets; the mitterns look very pure and modern, while incorporating traditional techniques and motifs. I love these patterns very, very much... a good motivation to get started with colorwork soon!

Liia's package also included three (!) bars of chocolate and marzipan (delicious and all gone, of course!) and some other lovely goods:

Wool, cotton, beads, card

A ball of cotton, a bag with beautiful colorful glass beads, a greeting card from Tallinn AND a huuuge ball of rainbow-colored wool. It can be used for knitting + felting (I think this would make a lovely bag!) or for spinning; I'm going to follow a drop spindle workshop on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day on 3 November in Rotterdam so this could become my first handspun as well :-)

A woolen rainbow

In any case, this was a very special package full of beautiful, interesting gifts... I've enjoyed getting a taste of Estonia through it! Thank you, Liia!

Update

Phew, hectic times in the Breibeest household. Busy at work, busy with other activities, busy with travelling from and to work. And therefore, too little time to write and comment about knitting. So, here's a very quick update with many photos and (this time) not so much blah-blah :-) ... if you'd like some more information about the projects below, click on the photos and you'll arrive at their Flickr page!

To start: a few forgotten FOs that I found when cleaning our wardrobe.

Glimmende roze muts.

Glossy & Pink Cap

Glossy pink hat. Doesn't flatter me, but it's cute for someone else! Size teenage girl or small woman's head; does anyone want it?

Vliegeniersmuts in acryl. Hele leuke constructie, maar niet flatterend. En die acryl, brr.

Aviator Cap

Aviator cap in acrylic. Cool construction (short rows), but not flattering. And that acrylic... shudder.

En nog wat nieuwtjes:

And then some new(er) stuff:

Ringwood sock in Trekking Pro Natura

The Trekking Pro Natura socks (a Nancy Bush pattern) are progressing slowly. They make me pretty happy, because they look very elegant when worn.

Noro Scarf, "Hers"

A striped Noro scarf. Some time ago, I had made a blue one for my boyfriend; now I'm making myself a pink one!

Onze kleine man (2 jaar) krijgt binnenkort lekker warme merino handschoenen en een bijpassende muts.

Toddler glove

Our little one (2 years old) will soon receive nice and warm, merino mittens and a matching hat.

Hand warmers for S.

And for a stylish friend (who normally only wears black) I'm making these hand warmers as a birthday gift.

Eerste stappen / First steps

Until last Friday evening, a sewing machine was a foreign and slightly frightening object for me. But on Saturday morning this was about to change, as I was then having my first sewing lesson at Rotterdam's brand new Naaicafé (sewing cafe).

First sewing project, ever

Praise and bless our gifted teacher, Caroline Vogel, who is also the initiator of the sewing cafe. In two hours, she had explained the basics of a sewing machine; and she let us all make a small, simple lined bag. (We were 7 people, aged 21-50 (?), 6 ladies and one guy, all colors of the rainbow.) During the next lessons we'll make a skirt, a pair of trousers, a top and a blouse/shirt.

DPN roll

I've started this course out of curiosity -- do I find sewing fun? Do I like working with a sewing machine? Am I not too clumsy for it? Deep inside, I hope to make my own clothing some day; but first, of course, I need to know if it's my cup of tea in the first place. And, well, after this first lesson I felt so energized and confident that I've undertaken a practice project on my old 1980s Singer. I've tried the tool roll from Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing.

DPN roll, inside

DPN roll

Now my DPNs have their own handy case. Made with cheap IKEA cotton and absolutely not perfect. But I had fun and it makes me happy. Hopefully I'll stay motivated!

Urchin

The new Knitty is up! It's chock-full of patterns that I find beautiful and very wearable: Roam and Neiman are exactly the kind of sweaters that I've been looking for, and I'm totally in love with the Muir wrap.

Rowan Country - Reed

And sometimes it just happens that a few pieces of a puzzle suddenly fall together and match. Several balls of beautiful stash yarn had no good destination, and then, poof!, you find the perfect pattern. This has just happened to me: with Rowan Country and Urchin.

Reed Urchin

Helemaal perfect.

Reed Urchin

Last year, I had bought 3 balls of Rowan Country on the Stitch 'n Bitch Day in Rotterdam. Lovely super bulky yarn, 100% wool, in green and brown, subtly self-striping. But not enough for a scarf. I had tried several patterns, frogged and frogged again, and, frustrated, buried the yarn deep in my stash. Such a pity. And suddenly, there was Urchin, a tam / beret pattern by the very talented Ysolda Teague, in the new Knitty. Perfect!

Reed Urchin

Ik word helemaal vrolijk van dit mutsje! Want:
  1. het was erg leuk om te maken; ik kan dit patroon aanbevelen voor allerlei "gekke" garens, ook dikke handgesponnen experimenten;
  2. het ging ontzettend snel (zo'n 4 tot 5 uur gebreid, en ik ben een nogal trage breister);
  3. het past perfect (ik maakte maat L maar deed 7 i.p.v. 8 "spieën");
  4. het past helemaal bij me, model en kleur en alles;
  5. het kleurt ontzettend mooi bij mijn nieuwe bruine duffelcoat;
This beret / tam makes me totally happy! Because:
  1. it was so much fun to make! I can recommend this pattern for all kinds of "crazy" bulky yarns, including strange handspun experiments;
  2. it went super-fast (4 to 5 hours, and I'm a slow knitter);
  3. it fits perfectly (I made size L but did only 7 wedges instead of 8);
  4. it's very much "me" (model and color and everything);
  5. it matches my brand new brown duffel coat;
  6. and I still have more than 1 ball left, good for a matching neckwarmer.

Doet iemand mee?!?)

On 15 September (this weekend), a sewing café will open its doors in Rotterdam! It's an open sewing atelier where you can drop by, order a cup of coffee or tea, and hire a sewing machine for an hour or longer. There's also a felting studio in the basement and there will be various courses. I think I'll go for the beginners' sewing course on Saturday mornings! Yay!

Libelle's Breiboek (1949) / Vintage patterns from 1949

Crocheted Spiral Scarf

Not much news on the UFO front. The Big Boy Blanket is slowly growing; in the same bulky merino-acrylic mix I've made two quick projects: a crocheted spiral scarf and a pair of very thick homey socks to warm my poor icy feet.

Cover voorkant

But in fact, I've been wanting to write about a nice thrift find for some time: a knitting pattern book from 1949.

Cover achterkant

Vlot wandeljasje

I really love that era's fashion style. I find it extremely elegant. Probably, knitting (and recycling yarn) was a bare necessity for women in those years shortly after the war. Patterns usually called for fine yarn and needles, comparable to our current sock yarns. But because of that, and because of the great stitch patterns, shaping and detailing, the clothing usually looks very refined.

Soms is het ook gewoon grappig.

Gebreid jongenspakje

And sometimes, it's just downright funny.

Damesbadpak

The knitting book I've bought was apparently published as a counterpart to the Dutch-language popular women's magazine Libelle -- which still exists today.

Damesjumper

Above and below are a few of my favorites from the pattern booklet.

Most of the patterns are written for a 90 to 98 cm bust. Mine is slightly larger (approx. 105 cm). I was wondering if I would be able to easily adapt the patterns in the booklet by simply using a looser gauge. Or would it be better to entirely recalculate the designs? Does someone have experience with that?

BTW, you can see the whole booklet here (on Flickr).

Kleine jongens worden groot / Little Boy, Big Boy

My toddler son has just turned two. It's incredible how time flies! In fact, I haven't knit many things for him yet and I intend to change that.
During a conversation on one of our Stitch 'n Bitch evenings, a few fellow knitters told how much their boys/kids love their handknit blankies. This inspired me to knit a blanket for my own curly-haired sweet boy!

I've been looking around for lovely blanket patterns; preferably one that is slightly "rough" and simple, not too babyish or childish, and large enough. A blanket that a 8-year-old or even 12-year-old boy would still like.

Big Boy Blanket Inspiration

I love the (crocheted) Babette Blanket, but it's rather girly. Further, I've always liked the Log Cabin Blanket (o.a. from Mason-Dixon Knitting). And the Circle of Friends Blanket from Last Minute Knitted Gifts is lovely because of its geometric simplicity. My heart especially started to beat faster when I saw this fabulous blankie made by Mustaa Villaa for her son. Great color palette in ton-sur-ton blue. And despite the garter stitch it has a very rich and complex structure. I wanted to make something similar; using garter stitch and, why not, mitered squares.

Big Boy Blanket

I started designing in Excel, and this is the schematic that I came up with.

Big Boy Blanket Schematic

I recently bought an enormous load of bulky yarn (Lana Grossa Due again); the colors for the blanket will be light green, dark green and blue -- all in solid and "chiné" (marled?) version.

Tas & Omslagdoek / Bag & Shawl

He he.

Phew. New job; my son has just turned 2 (which we celebrated in style!); and we've just returned from a long weekend in Kassel (visiting documenta 12 and, generally, having fun with old Belgian friends). And before you know it, you haven't blogged for about three weeks. Duh.

And in the meanwhile, ironically, I received this award! Thank you, Maijamirjami! Not sure if I deserve it ;-)

There are many bloggers whom I'd love to nominate, but I've seen this award on many blogs already. I'm a bit late to the party, I guess! So, at first I thought about the nice blogging ladies of Stitch 'n Bitch Rotterdam: knittingajour, Saskia, Storm op Zolder, Haakpoes and Knitting Frog (who has left NL in the meanwhile...) (we miss you!). I hope I didn't forget anyone!!!
I actually read (and thoroughly enjoy) many other blogs as well, but I'm planning to devote a separate post to that. More to come, therefore :-)

Blue-green meshwork bag = finished

During the past few weeks, I miraculously did manage to Finish two Objects. The first is a crocheted shopping bag: the Reduction Tote Bag from Crochet me Magazine. Made with crochet cotton, kindly donated by knittingajour! The deep blue color is actually much nicer than in the photograph; it's very difficult to capture.

Blue-green meshwork bag = finished

I like the bag. It folds into a very small square and can be stored into its own pocket (the beige granny square between the handles); it can hold many groceries and is intended to be worn over one shoulder. I think this pattern is also very appropriate for sock yarn, although you need quite a bit of it (I'd say 50 grams or more).

Perfect!

Bulky Feather & Fan Shawl

A second -- and ultra-quick -- project: a very warm and thick shawl for my mom. Via marktplaats.nl (the very popular Dutch eBay clone) I had bought 10 balls of Lana Grossa Due for a very low price. It's a nice bulky yarn that comes in lovely colors; a merino-acrylic mix. After some detective work (long live Ravelry!) I happened upon a nice pattern for a Feather and Fan Comfort Shawl.

Bulky Feather & Fan Shawl

The result is an, ehm, peculiar bulky red shawl. Very warm, which was my intention. I think it's funny and eccentric (as most shawls are knit in teeny weeny detailed lace patterns; this is different!) and I hope my mom will enjoy it very much.
