Sheep & Dog

Sheep & Dog, originally uploaded by Breibeest.

Maar wacht eens even...

A very nice surprise reached me last Thursday: an extra parcel from my Secret Pal! With two large skeins of very soft, fluffy and lovely yarn in beautiful natural colors, lighter and darker brown...

Wait...
What's that animal on the tags? The one that wags its tail?

Yes, it's a DOG -- this yarn is 50% sheep and 50% dog wool! Isn't that the coolest thing?!

The lighter and darker brown match so nicely together that I'm already envisioning a striped project. Would this yarn felt easily? Perhaps I should give it a try with a small sample...

Stitch 'n Bitch Dag 2007!

I picked this up at a few other Dutch knitblogs: there will be a second Stitch 'n Bitch Day in Rotterdam this year, 3 November to be precise. For all non-Dutch readers: the Stitch 'n Bitch day is probably the largest knitting-only (!!) fair in the Netherlands; last year was the first edition, and approximately 800 Dutch knitters turned up. It was fabulous.

Last year, I had lots of fun there, despite the fact that I didn't know anyone there; I had not attended our local SnB group yet and had only just picked up knitting again after a 5-year knitless period. So, I'm really looking forward to it.

Hoe ziet jouw ideale SnB-dag eruit?

I have an idea for an informal "blog meme" for anyone who wants to attend the second SnB day (probably less relevant for non-Dutch knitters ;-). If you want, feel free to copy the following three questions and answer them on your blog:

What would your ideal SnB-day look like?

1. Which shops, products, brands would you like to see there (in your wildest dreams)?
2. Which workshops, speakers, social activities would you be interested in?
3. Do you have any ideas or suggestions to make this year's SnB day even more fun and successful than the previous one?

Mijn antwoorden: My answers:

Mijn ideale SnB-dag:

(Summarizing my answers: my ideal SnB day would have lots of (hand painted) sock yarns, a la Storm op Zolder, Wollmeise (!!) and Blue Moon Fiber Arts, why not! I'd love to see some real Dutch knit blogger gatherings and workshops, I'd like to learn to dye and spin wool, and learn to work with a knitting machine. To make it even better, it would be good if the whole event would be a bit more spacious (you really had to use your elbows to be able to have a look at the stalls at the fair) and would attract more "younger" knitters.)

Back To Craft

Trekking XXL 147 Jaywalkers, originally uploaded by Breibeest.

After an impossibly busy period at work, I am back to my "normal" routine: day job during "regular" hours, and outside of that, lots of free time that I can dedicate to crafts!

That's bliss... life can be good for very simple reasons.

So, I am now making all kinds of tiny nice things for my Secret Pal. Because of my busy schedule, she hasn't received anything from me yet -- bad pal that I am... But this week I intend to send out a nice package to her.

Of course, this means that I can't show any photos of current projects. Top Secret!! That's why I present a picture of the Trekking XXL Jaywalkers (colorway 147, bought at Wolhalla, a super cool Dutch online sock yarn store) that I had finished some time ago already, but hadn't shown in all their glory yet. I'm proud of them!

Secret Pal Birthday Gift (en)

Secret Pal Birthday Gift, originally uploaded by Breibeest.

I'm usually very low-key about my birthday, which is somewhere in mid April.

Birthdays are a big thing in the Netherlands, but not so much in Belgium, where I was born and where I grew up. I'm used to only receiving a few little gifts (spending time with those I love is most important to me!) and to avoiding big birthday parties ;-)

So, it was an extremely pleasant surprise to find a package in the mail today -- containing birthday gifts from my Secret Pal! I had not expected it, and was deeply touched by it...

The package included two wrapped gifts - one blue, one green. These two colors proved to be the theme of the entire package: the green gift contained three balls of Noro Kureyon in just the perfect green-blue-purple-brown colorway (how on earth did you know that this is exactly the Noro colorway that I already had my eyes on?! :-) and a gorgeous skein of fine, handspun silk in deep blue and green.

There was also a birthday card (your handwriting is beautiful, BTW!) and a pattern for a very cool felted bag. Now, I have a very good reason to try felting for the very first time!

Last but not least, the blue package contained a fabulous handknitted item: a lovely purple scarf (it's difficult to photograph the color, but it's a strong, deep purple!) with an edge of lacy leaves; the scarf is slightly wider around the neck and narrower at the ends, and it is asymmetrical. Looks absolutely lovely when I wear it loosely around my neck, with one end draped over my shoulder.
I don't know how my Pal found out that I really love purple(I have many purple clothes!), asymmetry and lacy leaves; anyway, this scarf combines all of it. I'm already wearing it as protection against the chilly Spring evenings, and it will stay a favorite item in my wardrobe I'm sure!

Thank you so much, dear Pal, for all the love and attention that you put into the package, and especially in the scarf. It's wonderful to receive such a great and personal item from you. I send you many grateful Springtime kisses!

CIP (Clapotis In Progress)

I started one too: a Clapotis!

Actually, I wanted to knit Rusted Root. Preferably with a cotton blend from one of our LYS, but that didn't prove very simple. All the cotton yarns I saw were either too thin or too thick, and they often came in colors that I didn't entirely like (many light colors for the Summer, of course, but I prefer darker colors for t-shirts and sweaters and the like). So I ended up buying this Katia Espiga (a nice and soft cotton-acrylic microfiber mix), but it turned out too thin in the end...

Therefore, I started this Clapotis!

Kleine Cowboy...

Lil' Cowboy, originally uploaded by Breibeest.

During the past, busy weeks, I did manage to finish a few things -- my purple Trekking XXL Jaywalkers (now in the laundry, pictures will follow) and this cute cowboy hat for my Little Toddler Man!

The pattern is Child's Cowboy Hat -- fun to crochet, and ready in a single day (a few hours, actually). The yarn is Samos Novita; I used one and a half skein of the lovely cotton-acryl mix that my Secret Pal sent me. Thanks, Pal, I hope you like what I did with it!

My boy, in any case, looks über cute with it. Great hat for the Summer -- airy and with a large brim to block the sun from his vulnerable toddler skin. I still intend to add a decorative ribbon, a felted sheriff star and ropes to secure the hat under his chin, as my son is a pretty wriggly fellow :-)

Wanneer en door wie / When and by whom?

I'm pretty busy at work -- hence the relative silence at this blog. I haven't been knitting much the past week; I've started a pair of black silk socks for my Big Man and have started with the 10 first rows of a brown cotton Rusted Root. That's all, folks :-)

Bobbi, our "group leader" in Secret Pal 10, has a nice set of questions for us. Dear readers, feel free to answer them as well, in the comments!

1) How old were you when you learned how to knit?
8 years old. I grew up in Belgium and went to a girls-only, rather strict and traditional catholic primary school. When we were 8, we learned to crochet, to knit, to do simple embroidery and cross stitch, and even some macrame. I think we're one of the last generations of schoolgirls who had this in their curriculum, but I'm not sure!

2) Who taught you?
Our school teacher of 3rd grade (for 8-9 year old girls). Sadly, I entirely forgot her name... But I must say that my mom and my paternal grandmother nourished my love for knitting and crochet -- my mother was a rather fanatic knitter (she made heaps of spectacular, typical 1980s sweaters, many from the Anny Blatt brand) and my grandmother made dozens of crochet doilies, bedspreads and pillow cases.

How about you, reader?
